Love it or hate it, the 2017 live-action reboot of Disney's Beauty and the Beast was one of the best yet. That is if just about everything linking it to the original 1991 2D animated masterpiece was forgotten. Or the autotuning in the singing roles.

It was a highly enjoyable movie using the same sort of archetypes that many other Beauty and the Beast-inspired works do. There's a guy who is a complete jerk, and some girl comes along and saves him through the power of love. Not to mention, it at least tried to remedy some of the issues brought forth in the older adaption, giving fans some more things to think about. Just try not to think about how they handled Lefou.

10 Fixed: The Time Scale

2017 Beauty And The Beast Belle And The Rose

If the narrator at the beginning of the 1991 adaption is listened to, that places the Beast at roughly age 12 when the Enchantress appeared and cursed him and his entire estate. Of course, a 12-year-old wasn't going to care about someone based solely on looks.

The 2017 reboot makes it a little vaguer by not even touching on ages. Now it's just whenever the last petal falls, not necessarily a distinct time limit. So maybe this guy can get out of his teenage years before trying to find love, because how often does that really work?

9 Ruined: His Name Is Adam

2017 Beauty And The Beast Final Dance Belle And Adam

Despite the fact the movie fixed the timeline, the prince's name is still never once mentioned throughout the entire movie. Belle even still refers to him as "Beast" during the iconic scene when he turns human again.

The prince's name is Adam, not Beast. It has been that way since the beginning, and yet apparently the producers didn't feel it necessary to let this girl ever know his real name. Instead, they felt it totally necessary to include a bunch of other babble about him while still avoiding giving fans a name drop.

8 Fixed: Her Father Isn't Totally Helpless

2017 Beauty And The Beast Maurice And Gaston

For a genius, it wouldn't make sense as to why Maurice was so passive. In the 1991 adaption, he was a cooky old inventor. In the 2017 adaption, he was an artistic clockmaker. It wouldn't make sense that someone so brilliant would be completely unable to do anything by himself.

So instead of sitting by and taking up a sort of ditzy damsel in distress role, the new Maurice actually picked his own lock and even got involved in some fisticuffs in order to help.

7 Ruined: Giving The War Backstory To Gaston

2017 Beauty And The Beast Gaston

It was a pretty cheap hack for it and made it less believable honestly. Instead of having been around the town for the majority of his life as their prime hunter, Gaston was given a cheaply patched together traumatic war backstory in an attempt to justify his weirdly added bouts of anger.

Instead of trying to make a character that was more woe is me!, they should have played more heavily on the small-town vibes and control the one loud guy. It made it more confusing and unbelievable during his call to action that got everyone to siege the castle when really most people shouldn't even remember who he is.

6 Fixed: Where Was Belle's Mother

2017 Beauty And The Beast Belle And The Enchantress

Now maybe falling into Black Death territory was not the greatest plan of action but it sort of fit with the vague timeline they were trying to do. It explains why Maurice and Belle had to move into a small town that was far enough out of reach they weren't concerned when the local lord stopped collecting their taxes.

The 1991 adaption never said a word about Belle's mother, but at least in the 2017 one, fans are given definite closure as to why she isn't present.

5 Ruined: That Whole Book Arc

2017 Beauty And The Beast Belle And Adam In The Library

They added a whole magical book on top of the mirror for Adam to go explore the world with, but then they never really did anything with it but to explain where her mom went. It was a strange loop and doesn't make sense as to why it was never used again.

It kind of made it so that most of the fighting and such was completely unnecessary, and even caused some of the instigating clashings between Belle and Adam that really could have just been avoided without it.

4 Fixed: Thanks For Explaining Why Nobody Knew About Them

2017 Beauty And The Beast Enchanted Objects

That simple "the enchantment had them forget about what was happening" was a lot of good play on the part of the producers. It's sort of a cheap ploy, but fans had been wondering for years as to why the people of their little town had seemingly no clue about the whole enchanted forest, castle, or even the lord inside of it.

It also gave life to the staff outside of the castle and helped explain why they were so desperate to hitch their prince up with some random girl who just happened to be there.

3 Ruined: It Was Too Dark A Lot Of The Time

2017 Beauty And The Beast Ballroom

Everything from the lighting to the designs was so dark and dreary that it lost a lot of its whimsy. Rococo style tends to also be a lot brighter and more beautiful than the movie made it out to be. The colors were too muted for the style, and really had nothing to pop. Not to mention the whole story took on a darker undertone that tried to make its way to more adult audiences.

It makes sense that Adam, having neglected the place would have it darker and gloomier. The problem was that even after it had been cleaned up, it still looked confining and desolate instead of whimsical. There were very few scenes in which it actually felt bright and magical, and while that may have been an attempt at dramatic storytelling, it made some scenes more lackluster than they should have been.

2 Fixed: Gave A Little More Bonding Time With Adam & Belle

2017 Beauty And The Beast Belle And Adam

The whole time of how long Belle and Adam had been together was still rather shaky, but at least it was shown on screen for some more bonding between the two of them.

Even if the whole magical teleporting book and the enchanted mirror was kind of the instigation for some of their strife, it played a little better this time around to give Belle a reason to appreciate Adam and see that he was trying to put a better foot forward when it came to her by showing/giving her these magical objects.

1 Ruined: The Whole Caveat Of The Enchantment

2017 Beauty And The Beast Enchantress

So at least it explained why the staff was so insistent on getting Belle and Adam together. They were going to turn into just regular objects, leaving Adam as a beast permanently and completely alone. The thing is that it doesn't explain if the rest of the area is going to forget about their families and loved ones permanently as well.

Then no matter what, the Enchantress showed up to fix everything in the end so it took away from the whole point of the flower being the catalyst in the first place.
