The Rolling Stones might never be your beasts of burden, but the furry stars of the comic book Beasts of Burden sure will.

According to Variety, so will director Shane Acker, who just signed on to helm the Reel FX CG-animated adaptation of the acclaimed Dark Horse comic by Evan Dorkin (Milk & Cheese) and Jill Thompson (Scary Godmother). Acker has done special effects and pre-visualization work on movies like the Total Recall remake and Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. He also showed his directing chops with 2009's 9, which he also wrote.

Beasts of Burden features a group of animals -- mostly dogs -- who investigate supernatural and paranormal mysteries. The concept originally appeared in a Dark Horse horror anthology and has gone on to appear in Dark Horse Presents, its own miniseries, more anthologies and a one-shot with Hellboy.

The Beasts of Burden film was announced in June 2011, followed quickly by the news that Jack the Giant Slayer writer Darren Lemke would write the screenplay. The film is being co-executive produced by Dark Horse founder Mike Richardson.
