WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Season 2 of Beastars, now streaming on Netflix.
Season 2 of Beastars finds Legoshi moving away from his romance with Haru a bit, trying to figure out more about himself as a carnivore who doesn't want to eat herbivores. In addition, he's gotten caught up with the Season 1 murder mystery over Tem, the alpaca from his drama club, which once more plunges Legoshi into a place where his primal urges begin swirling.
However, Gouhin, the panda from the Black Market returns to help him out. It produces a training regime that's sadistic, yet heartbreaking as it tugs at something quite sentimental in Legoshi's journey of empathy, compassion and self-discovery.
Legoshi is assaulted at Cherryton Academy in the dark of night by the person who murdered Tem with the intent of stymying the investigation. The animal beats him badly, although Legoshi's able to lock into his scent to prevent further damage. But he needs to figure out how to release the predator within and work his scent vault, so he seeks out Gouhin who's been kidnapping carnivores and reconditioning them to go back out into society.
He's reluctant as Legoshi is so young but eventually, he concedes as he can tell the wolf has potential as an alpha. The training is exceptionally difficult though, because apart from being excruciatingly physical, it's mental as well. Legoshi's locked in chambers with huge slabs of meat from the market, with Gouhin tempting him to give in. If he does, he's failed the regimen, so it's a true test of the student's will.
It also requires Legoshi to implement his skills in the field, attacking meat-eaters at night and kidnapping them for Gouhin to reform. He's shockingly muzzled and therefore limited, with his master doing this not out of enjoyment, but necessity. Gouhin wants Legoshi to use his arms, not his bite. While Legoshi knows his jaw power is weak, by thinking and out-maneuvering opponents with his limbs, he will be able to unlock key parts of his brain that transcend the usual carnivores in Beastars.
The plan works, with Legoshi being calm around meat and attackers, wowing Gouhin who didn't expect him to reach this level. It'll help in the future when he's around Haru and his hormones start raging as well, as he won't want to eat her. But while it's successful, the training takes a toll as Gouhin finds Legoshi burying all the slabs, making emotive graves.
Legoshi admits when he gets the meat, he tracks down their identities and opts to live with these ghosts -- man, woman or child -- who were taken by the market and chopped up to sell. It's dark but a necessary evil Legoshi uses to level up, hoping one day animals will coexist the way he can. These victims remind him what he's fighting for in Beastars so ultimately, he has to honor and respect the lost, forgotten and taken souls who never got justice due to this illicit trade.
