BBC Debuts New Images For 'Doctor Who' Christmas Special, 'Sherlock'

With the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special in the rear-view mirror, there's one main thing for Whovians to look forward to, or possibly dread depending on your point of view: the Christmas special. Dubbed "The Time of the Doctor," the Dec. 25 episode will send current star Matt Smith off and introduce Peter Capaldi as the rejuvenated Time Lord.

Hero Complex unveiled a group of new images from the episode, along with a more detailed description than we've seen before:

Orbiting a quiet backwater planet, the massed forces of the universe’s deadliest species gather, drawn to a mysterious message that echoes out to the stars. And amongst them – the Doctor. Rescuing Clara from a family Christmas dinner, the Time Lord and his best friend must learn what this enigmatic signal means for his own fate and that of the universe.

The other big BBC series in the works that have people awaiting anxiously is the Season 3 premiere of Sherlock. Entertainment Weekly posted a slew of new images from the series opener which hits British airwaves on New Year's Day and on this side of the pond Jan. 19.
