Baymax! fans are pushing back against online outrage pertaining to the Big Hero 6 spinoff series' depiction of period products and LGBTQ+ characters.

The third episode of Disney+'s Baymax! has set some "fans" into an outrage online. The episode in question features the titular medical robot going on an errand to purchase period products for a pre-teen girl dealing with puberty. A trans man also makes an appearance in the episode -- and despite some bad-faith backlash, most fans were quick to espouse their support for the series and how it has handled representation largely across the board.

While the episode did receive some pushback online, the overwhelming majority of responses to it have been positive. Many fans have pointed out that Baymax is in fact a medical robot, and as such, is only doing both the right thing and what it was programmed for by helping the episode's pre-teen character. Others have noted that many trans men still experience periods, so including one in a sequence about the realities of menstruation makes sense.

Baymax! continues the adventures of the series' titular healthcare companion, which began in 2014's Big Hero 6 animated feature film. The original film was loosely based on the Marvel comic book series of the same name created by Man of Action Entertainment. Big Hero 6 told the story of Hiro Hamada, a young robotics prodigy who finds himself embroiled in a sprawling, super-villainous conspiracy.

Baymax! isn't the only animated feature to garner similar criticism and praise for the same subject matter. Pixar's Turning Red fell under the microscope for its own portrayal of puberty, period products and women's health. The film was lauded for its handling of those subjects, as well as its portrayal of uncomfortable family traditions and experiences.

Lightyear also received no small amount of coverage for its early removal of a scene featuring a quick kiss between a married lesbian couple. Disney ultimately restored the scene after response to the move proved to be primarily negative. Producer Galyn Susman commented on the importance of the scene upon its restoration, saying, "Being able to put back the kiss was important to us -- it's a touching moment. It helps Buzz to see what it is that he's [missing]. It's the life that's being lived in front of him by his best friend that he's not having"

Baymax! is currently streaming on Disney+.
