WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Justice League Incarnate #2, on sale now from DC Comics.

Justice League Incarnate just introduced a new version of Batman into the DC Universe who may be the most evil and destructive version of the character in the DC Multiverse. The Batwoman Who Laughs has come along to pick up where her Dark Multiverse predecessor left, intending to create chaos throughout the multiverse. While it could be assumed that she has the same origin as the original version of the character, the truth is that there is one big difference separating them that could spell doom for all reality.

The fight against Darkseid just got a lot more complicated in Justice League Incarnate #2 (by Joshua Williamson, Dennis Culver, Kyle Hotz, Andrei Bressan, Paul Pelletier, Norm Rapmund, Hi-Fi and Tom Napolitano). The multiversal team finally tracked down their foe and the crack in reality that he's so desperate to control. As they tried to end the fight once and for all, the Batwoman Who Laughs crashed the party with a shocking revelation in tow.

Using her multivision, team member Dr. Multiverse can see all the variants of someone across reality. As such, she can determine a lot about them, such as where they come from and their place in the multiverse. When she used that power on the Batwoman Who Laughs, she discovered that the new villain wasn't from the Dark Multiverse like her predecessor. She was actually Kathy Kane, the original Batwoman of Earth-11.

The fact that she's from this multiverse and not its dark variant says a lot about the state of reality right now. The events of the Infinite Frontier series led to Barry Allen creating a crack in the multiverse. Darkseid currently seeks to harness what lies beyond the crack to take control of The Great Darkness and use it as a weapon. However, while the crack remains open, it corrupts the multiverse. The longer it stays open, the more likely it is that the 52 Earths that Justice League Incarnate defends will start to look more and more like those that appear in the Dark Multiverse.

The world that this new villain comes from, Earth-11, is a gender-swapped version of the mainstream DC Universe. When the Amazons decided to impose their laws on the rest of the world, they created a matriarchal world where women are the dominant force instead of men. As such, the majority of the heroes in their Justice League, the Justice Guild, are women. Their female version of Batman, Kathy Kane, was recently seen helping Wonder Woman in her quest to get back home. Now, however, she's been transformed into a twisted version of her former self.

A different look at the Batwoman who laughs

The leader of Earth-11's Justice Guild, Aquawoman, is also a member of Justice League Incarnate, and was understandably shocked to see what had happened to her friend and teammate. What this single corrupted hero could mean for her world is grim. If the corruption has reached Earth-11, it stands to reason that more of her friends and allies could meet a similarly twisted fate.

If this is allowed to continue as is, more worlds in the DC multiverse could be corrupted, creating even more villainous variants. The only way to avoid facing the grim fate of the Dark Multiverse is to close the crack in reality. But with Darkseid still determined to take control of the fissure, this is something that is much easier said than done.
