Recasting Kate Kane on The CW's Batwoman took well over a year.

"Yeah, so I actually went out for it last year, when they announced the departure of Ruby [Rose]," Wallis Day (Krypton), the new Kate Kane on The CW's Batwoman told CBR. "But a few weeks into the process, they said that they were heading in a different direction."

Day added that showrunner Caroline [Dries] wrote her an email about the change, but told her they would give her a call should they decide on bringing Kate Kane back. Day continued, "I was just like, [sighs] 'Yeah, right, everyone always says this to the actors!' But to be honest, I was really upset about it, because it just felt like such a right move. You never really get excited, because you kind of get used to rejection as an actor, but it just gnawed at me."

However, Day finally got a call in January, recalling, "Caroline called, and I was like, 'Yes, I do still want to play Kate! Let's do it!' And here we are."

After Rose's exit from The CW series, Batwoman's second season started off by suggesting Kane was killed in a plane crash, leaving the mantle of Batwoman open for Ryan Wilder (Javicia Leslie). However, it was revealed in Season 2, Episode 9 that Kate had actually been captured and held captive by Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask, since her plane crashed.

Following Day's first appearance as the new Kate Kane, Rose congratulated her replacement on Instagram. "I'm sorry I didn't congratulate [Wallis Day] yesterday," Rose wrote. "I knew about the casting beforehand and didn't know when [the episode] aired so I forgot to. But I'm stoked for her! I'm seeing all the things I'm tagged in with people sad or wondering how I felt. I feel great [and] I have nothing but good vibes."

While some fans questioned the timeline for recasting the character, showrunner Dries said in March that they wanted to make sure the transition between actors felt organic, explaining, "It would have been a clunky transition between Season 1 and Season 2 if we had just full-blown recast Kate with no organic story behind it."

Batwoman stars Javicia Leslie as Ryan Wilder, Rachel Skarsten as Alice, Meagan Tandy as Sophie Moore, Camrus Johnson as Luke Fox, Dougray Scott as Jacob Kane, Nicole Kang as Mary Hamilton-Kane and Wallis Day as Kate Kane. New episodes air Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
