Fans of The CW's Batwoman are hopeful that a mention of Swamp Thing in the midseason finale will offer some closure for the character's canceled series. On Twitter, many fans noted the mention of Swamp Thing in Season 3, Episode 7 of Batwoman, "Pick Your Poison." The character's name was dropped in a discussion surrounding the powers of Nicole Kang's Mary Hamilton/Poison Ivy, where it was noted that "no one's seen a plant-based infection like this since Swamp Thing." Several fans also noted that this mention seemingly confirmed the existence of Swamp Thing in the Arrowverse.RELATED: Batwoman Reveals the Black Glove Society's Twisted Origin

The first season of Swamp Thing was released on DC Universe in 2019, though the series was canceled shortly after its premiere despite the positive response from critics on its first episodes. While it was picked up by The CW, with all existing episodes airing in late 2020, a second season has not been confirmed. Earlier this year, when asked about the possibility of a second season, CW boss Mark Pedowitz noted that the character could appear on another Arrowverse series, but an entire second season was unlikely to happen.

"It'd be interesting to have Swamp Thing on Legends of Tomorrow, that would be a fun way to do it, but I'm not sure that would happen," Pedowitz said at the time. In an interview with CBR last year, DC's Legends of Tomorrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim also addressed the possible return of Swamp Thing.

"I mean, look, I tried very, very hard to get Swamp Thing in 'Crisis on Infinite Earths.' Because when you've got Constantine, to not have a crossover with Swamp Thing, it's just a shame, a wasted opportunity," Guggenheim said. "I honestly don't know the answer to that question, in large part because whether The CW has the broadcast rights to Swamp Thing or not, it doesn't really impact the various reasons why Swamp Thing wasn't in 'Crisis.' My attitude is always hope springs eternal."

Swamp Thing originally starred Crystal Reed, Andy Bean, Derek Mears, Jennifer Beals, Henderson Wade, Will Patton, Virginia Madsen, Jeryl Prescott and Kevin Durand. While the mention of the character made fans hopeful for possible closure on the canceled series, it remains unclear if the name-drop was simply an Easter egg or a tease for what's to come in the Arrowverse series.

Batwoman returns to The CW on Jan. 12, 2022.
