A Batwoman/Superman and Lois crossover was announced on May 14 and planned for sometime within 2021. With this crossover, fans may finally get closure about what happened to the Arrowverse's version of Batman, why he turned in his cowl and and why he left Gotham City.
The existence of The Dark Knight was heavily speculated within the Arrowverse, starting with easter eggs within Arrow and The Flash before finally being confirmed in Supergirl's Season 2, Episode 7, "The Darkest Place," with Kara (Melissa Benoist) talking about her cousin working with a vigilante who has "tons of gadgets." The first official confirmation of Batman came within the yearly crossover event "Elseworlds" from Arrow, Season 7, Episode 9, where viewers learned that Batman exists, resides in Gotham City and was the first vigilante. This crossover also came with the introduction of Batwoman (Ruby Rose), which cemented The Dark Knight as an official member of the universe.
With the events of Crisis On Infinite Earths fusing all multiverses into Earth-Prime, viewers can speculate with great certainty that Tyler Hoechlin's Superman has teamed up with the missing Batman. With news of the crossover between the newly ordered Superman & Lois show as well as the latest edition to the Arrowverse, Batwoman, this leaves fans hoping for an answer about what made Batman vanish.
Superman and Batman have been friends in the comics for decades, and with the hint dropped in Supergirl Season 2, audiences at least know they've worked together in this universe. Superman can finally clarify why Batman left and if there is any chance of him returning.
Within the Batwoman episode of Crisis, audiences also meet an old and disheveled Batman (Kevin Conroy) from Earth-99, who became a murderer and killed off all of his villains as well as the best heroes of his universe. There is no telling if Earth-Prime's version of Batman followed a similar fate, but it was stated in Batwoman Season 1, Episode 17, "A Narrow Escape," that Batman killed the Joker of Earth-Prime, which is what caused him to go into hiding.
Very little is known about the crossover other than the fact that Mark Pedowitz, chairman and CEO of The CW stated to Deadline that, "It will be smaller than usual... there's a lot of characters coming from our other shows." This could mean that the event will be more akin to either The Flash, Season 1, Episode 8, "Flash vs Arrow," or Supergirl Season 1 Episode 18, "World's Finest," in which the crossover is not about a universal threat, and instead fans are treated to more banter and friendly interactions between the heroes.
Batwoman, which debuted in 2019, was quickly greenlit for a second season. The series follows Kate Kane working to clean up Gotham City alongside Luke Fox, Jacob Kane, Mary Hamilton and Sophie Moore. The hero's inaugural season has pit Batwoman against Alice, who is in actuality Kate's long lost sister. In her first season, Batwoman crossed over with the rest of the CW's superhero shows for Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Superman & Lois received a series order in advance of its pilot. While there are still a lot of mysteries surrounding the plot, Tyler Hoechlin will reprise his role as Clark Kent/Superman, and Elizabeth Tulloch will return as Lois Lane. Jordan Elsass will play Jonathan Kent while Alexander Garfin will bring Jordan Kent to life. The two are the sons of Superman and Lois.
