Ruby Rose’s unexpected departure from Batwoman sent shockwaves through the internet, and while the reason for her exit is currently unknown, Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Stephanie Beatriz is open to playing the role. The CW will be moving ahead with the second season of the series and plans to recast the lead role. Beatriz wrote on Twitter that she, "Reads everything about Batwoman," indicating she's a hardcore fan of the character and that she’s willing to move to Gotham for the role.RELATED: Batwoman Star Ruby Rose Exits The CW Series

Beatriz plays Rosa Diaz on the NBC comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and she might have a strong case in her favor. Diaz is a hard-nosed detective from Brooklyn, so Beatriz is not unaccustomed to urban combat, and her character’s coming out story isn’t so different than that of Kate Kane.

In the fifth season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Rosa initially hid the truth about her sexuality when a woman on the phone called her "babe," and she claimed that it was her sister. However, she eventually revealed her truth to the pestering Detective Boyle. She admitted, "I’m dating a woman. I’m bi." In a later episode, Diaz came out to her squad and to her parents in an emotionally raw scene.

When Batwoman returned to the comic book scene in 2006's weekly series 52, the character made news when she was written as openly gay. Writer Greg Rucka and artist J.H. Williams III chronicled Kate's solo journey in the pages of Detective Comics and the intolerance she faced in her military academy. Similarly, this storyline is paralleled in the Arrowverse series as Kate stands up against the Point Rock Academy's strict code against homosexuality and gets expelled for her truth.

In real life, Beatriz is an out and proud bisexual woman. She's been a vocal advocate of the LGBT community and her coming out story on Brooklyn Nine-Nine was celebrated for being an affirming depiction of bisexuality.

Returning to The CW in Jan. 2021, Batwoman stars Ruby Rose, Rachel Skarsten, Meagan Tandy, Camrus Johnson, Dougray Scott and Nicole Kang. The series airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
