Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries has described Season 3's version of Poison Ivy as being true to the character's comics canon, but with a twist.

“I’m super excited about the Poison Ivy storyline. There’s a huge facet of it that we haven’t revealed to the press that will be really fun for the audience to participate in,” Dries told TVLine. “We do a combination of staying true to the Poison Ivy canon and what we normally do, which is put our own spin on it. It’s a major story arc of the season, and we make it really really hard on Batwoman.”

Tbe Batwoman Season 2 finale ended with several Batman super-villain trophies being scattered into Gotham River. Most pointedly, the episode's final shot showed Poison Ivy's vines taking root on the river's shoreline, setting the stage for the character's appearance in Season 3.

Created by writer Robert Kanigher and artist Sheldon Moldoff, Pamela Isley/Poison Ivy first appeared in 1966's Batman #181. Agent Carter alum Bridget Regan is playing Batwoman's iteration of the character, who "was a passionate, brilliant scientist with a mind for changing the world for the better. But her plans shifted when she was experimented on by a colleague, injected with various plant toxins which turned her into the infamous Batman villain Poison Ivy. With a formidable power coursing through her veins, Pamela used her powers to do what she thought was right… even if Batman and those closest to her disagreed with her dangerous methods. Now effectively wiped off the board for years, Batwoman and the Bat Team must prepare themselves for Poison Ivy to return with a vengeance. "

Poison Ivy is one of three super-villains confirmed for Batwoman Season 3 so far, along with the Mad Hatter (who's portrayed by Schmigadoon! actor Amitai Marmorstein) and what's described as a "new incarnation" of Killer Croc. Season 3 will also see Ryan Wilder dealing with the emotional and psychological fallout from the bombshell that Alice dropped at the end of Season 2 -- that her biological mother is alive.

“Part of her thinks Alice is messing with her, and deep down is hoping that Alice is messing with her, so she doesn’t have to deal with this. What she ultimately learns is Alice was telling the truth," teased Dries.

Batwoman returns with its Season 3 premiere, "Mad As a Hatter," Oct. 13 on The CW.
