Batwoman writer Daniel Thomsen opened up about adding a nonbinary character to the world of the Arrowverse in the show's latest episode.

Thomsen took to Twitter last night ahead of "Gore on Canvas" debuting to discuss the episode and the addition of nonbinary character Evan Blake, played by Lincoln Clauss. In the episode, Blake is an old friend of Kate Kane's and has an in with the mysterious Collective. The group allows the wealthy to purchase illicit works of art, and Batwoman and the Crows are both seeking a painting that might have a clue leading to Kate.

Along with teasing elements of the episode, Thomsen explained why it was important to write Evan Blake into the show and how he hopes they can appear again in future installments.

On tonight's episode of Batwoman, Caroline gave me the opportunity to introduce a non-binary character.

There's a beautiful messiness to queer coming of age that can be trampled when we feel pressure to adopt a fixed gender identity/expression. Life is long and unpredictable, and the evolution of self should be celebrated. As a writer, I've long wanted to add a character to the conversation that knows they deserve a rich journey to find happiness, even if they don't know precisely what form that happiness will take. The fun is getting there, and the vehicle is confidence. We only scratch the surface with this character tonight, but I hope we'll see more of them in the future.

This is just one element of a jam-packed episode. We've got a great journey for Batwoman and Sophie, forcing them to confront some hard truths. Growing pains within the Bat Family. A scene between Ryan and Luke that blows me away every time I see it... Javicia and Cam are heat-seeking missiles for emotional truth. We'll also see a new side of Alice that I hope makes you smile.

Thank you to everyone who brought this episode to life under the difficult pandemic circumstances, especially our director, Norma Bailey.

The role is Clauss' first TV appearance, as the actor mostly has a background in theater. Batwoman has already broken ground by featuring not one but two lesbian main characters on a superhero series, and now it looks like it will finally start exploring trans identities in the Arrowverse.
