Batwoman is moving forward without Kate Kane.

According to Decider, new character Ryan Wilder will take up the Scarlet Knight's mantle in Season 2. As such, the show will not recast Kate Kane, who was played by Ruby Rose in Season 1.

The casting notice calls for a "female, mid-late 20s, any ethnicity." According to the character description, "She's likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She's also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her... With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero." LGBTQ-identifying actors were encouraged to submit.

Last month, The CW announced Rose's shocking departure from Batwoman. Few details about her exit have been officially revealed, though she recently shared a social media post thanking the cast and crew of The CW series. Since then, many believed the role would simply be recast. Several actors even volunteered to take her place, including Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Stephanie BeatrizThe Magicians' Jade Tailor, Krypton alum Wallis Day, and WWE's Sonya Deville.

In Batwoman, Kate is Bruce Wayne's cousin, who followed in his footsteps after she discovered his secret. The majority of Season 1's plot involved her family, as her twin sister Alice set out to take revenge on Kate and their father Jacob due to her believe that they had abandoned her. The season finale ended on an emotional cliffhanger, where Jacob waged full-on war against Batwoman and even tried to kill her. Then, to make matters worse, Alice disguised her fellow villain Hush as Bruce, with the intention of sending him to Wayne Tower to steal the one thing that can pierce the Batsuit: Kryptonite.

At the time of writing, it is unclear how the show will transition from Kate to Ryan while resolving these cliffhangers. Although this is mere speculation, it is possible Rose will return in a guest star capacity to round off the plot, while making room for the new Batwoman. Given her statements, it would seem Rose departed the series on good terms with the creators, which open the door for her to return here and there in a smaller role.

Returning to The CW in Jan. 2021, Batwoman stars Rachel Skarsten, Meagan Tandy, Camrus Johnson, Dougray Scott and Nicole Kang. The series airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
