WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Batwoman Season 3, Episode 7, "Pick Your Poison," which aired Wednesday, Nov. 24 on The CW.

The CW's Batwoman just introduced a new version of the Joker to the Arrowverse, with Ryan Wilder's brother Marquis Jet taking over Wayne Enterprises and reinventing himself as the Clown Prince of Crime's successor. Marquis may now hold the claim to the title of Batwoman's archenemy, and he's an intensely personal foe to Ryan and everyone else on the Bat Team, but his arc may actually have been inspired by the 2015 video game Batman: Arkham KnightBatwoman's current season contains several elements that feel reminiscent of that game's story, including a storyline revolving around the deceased Joker's legacy.

In Batman: Arkham City, Joker (who is suffering a severe sickness caused by the usage of the Titan formula) sends his poisoned blood to hospitals all over Gotham City before poisoning Batman with it. While the Dark Knight manages to find a cure, Joker ends up passing away from his sickness, and Batman and Robin seemingly manage to track down all of his blood. Unfortunately, Arkham Knight reveals that they missed four people, all of whom end up being infected by a mysterious disease that causes them to essentially turn into the Joker.

Shortly before the events of Arkham Knight, Batman identifies and captures the four potential new Jokers: an entertainer named Johnny Charisma, a Queen Industries executive named Christina Bell, a boxer named Albert King and a principal named Henry Adams, who strangely doesn't seem to show any signs of infection. Batman keeps them in a secret base and has Robin study Henry's blood to figure out what makes him different. Shockingly, it turns out that Henry was actually the maddest of them all, releasing the other villains before killing them and then himself.

There are several similarities between this storyline and Marquis' turn to evil in Batwoman, but the most obvious one is the focus on the legacy of the deceased Joker. The Arrowverse's version of Joker canonically died years ago, but one of his many crimes, while he was alive, was attacking Marquis with his joy buzzer, damaging the boy's brain and sending him down a path of violent and sociopathic tendencies. Both Marquis and Arkham Knight's Jokers were innocent victims of the maniacal clown's rampage, having been turned to madness as a result of his crimes.

Marquis also inhabits elements of all four potential Jokers -- Christina Bell's business savvy, Johnny Charisma's showmanship, Albert King's rage and most importantly, Henry Adams' manipulation skills. Henry was able to deceive Batman until it was too late, rendering all of Robin's hard work useless, while Marquis did the exact same thing to Ryan. When she realized his true nature, he had already been able to stage a hostile takeover of Wayne Enterprises, taking everything away from her.

Henry ends up committing suicide after realizing that Batman is infected with the Joker illness as well, believing himself inferior to the Dark Knight. This is where Marquis differs, as he no longer seems to see Ryan or his mother as a threat after accomplishing his goal, now treating life like one big joke. Despite his temporary success, Marquis may end up wishing he took his sister a bit more seriously, seeing as Batwoman is sure to do anything to get her company back. While the series probably won't send Marquis on a trip into Ryan's brain like Batman: Arkham Knight did in its conclusion, the downfall of the Arrowverse's new Joker is still sure to be satisfying.

To witness the Arrowverse's Joker, new episodes of Batwoman return to The CW on Jan. 12, 2022.
