Batwoman star Javicia Leslie responded to an old video of the actor tearfully discussing the racism she experienced after she was initially cast in The CW series.

In the video, Leslie tearfully addressed the racist backlash she had experienced after her casting as Batwoman. However, after three seasons on The CW, Leslie responded to the video with gratitude for the support of her community and fans. "Thank you for this!!! I felt so alone when I started this journey," Leslie said on Twitter. "But with you, this community, I feel completely surrounded and covered. I pray that this work continues to create this kind of love. Thank you."

This was not the first time Leslie addressed racist detractors over her Batwoman role. In October 2020, the star dealt with an influx of offensive comments on her social media, to which she responded, "To all those leaving racist comments and messages on my page…you chose the wrong one. It only makes me go harder." Leslie has portrayed Ryan Wilder/Batwoman on The CW series since Season 2, which first premiered in 2021, after replacing Ruby Rose as the titular DC hero.

The CW broke new ground in casting Leslie as not only the first Black Batwoman but DC's first time casting a Black woman as the lead hero in a television series. This is also the second time the character has been written as an out lesbian. In a January 2021 interview, Leslie addressed her historic role by saying, "I always just remind myself that my purpose isn’t for me. My purpose is to empower other people."

"God brought me here for a reason," she continued. "He put me in this position for a reason. With that, it’s nothing to fear because I know this will empower someone to see a Black female superhero. You don’t get to see it often. It’s so epic. I grew up on Batman and Catwoman and the Joker and Penguin. Now, to see blackness in that, I think it’s very inclusive. Very empowering."

The CW has so far only renewed two of its Arrowverse shows for additional seasons, which consist of The Flash and Superman & Lois, leaving the futures of Batwoman, Legends of Tomorrow and several other original scripted series up in the air. Recently, the writers of Batwoman asked fans to push for a fourth season, though nothing has been officially confirmed by The CW.

All three seasons of Batwoman are available to stream on HBO Max.
