Caroline Dries, showrunner of The CW's Batwoman, has promised the upcoming exit of Ruby Rose's Kate Kane won't lead to accusations of the Arrowverse series fitting the "Bury Your Gays" television trope. While Rose led the first season of Batwoman as the titular hero, the star announced she'll be leaving ahead of Season 2. With questions about what the loss of the show's main character will mean for a series so early in its lifespan, Dries has assured fans she knows how to handle such a monumental change.RELATED: Batwoman: What Ruby Rose's Exit And The Early Finale Mean For Season 2Posting on Twitter, Dries promised fans that Kate Kane would not be erased or killed off. "As a lesbian who’s been working as a writer for the past 15 years, I’m well aware of the 'Bury Your Gays' trope and I have no interest in participating in it," Dries explained. She reiterated that she loves Kane and her "disappearance" will be part of Season 2's mysteries.

The Bury Your Gays trope is the idea that LGBTQ+ characters are more expendable and killed off for the sake of plot progression. Although the idea is nothing new, GLAAD’s annual TV analysis from 2016 revealed a record number of 25 lesbian characters were killed off in a single year. Shows including The Walking Dead, The 100 and even Arrow were put under scrutiny.

Yesterday's report that Kate Kane would be killed off was completely debunked by The CW. Dries previously explained her reasoning for not recasting the role and said she didn't want Batwoman to go down the "soap opera" route. It would appear Dries is committed to making Kate Kane's departure work and avoid any chance of fitting the "Bury Your Gays" stereotype.

Airing Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, Batwoman stars Rachel Skarsten, Meagan Tandy, Camrus Johnson, Dougray Scott and Nicole Kang. The series returns in January 2021.
