In The CW series, Pam Isley was a botanist and the ex-girlfriend of Renee Montoya, the leader of Gotham City's Rogues unit. When Isley was a Gotham University student, she was unwillingly subjected to experiments by one of her classmates, giving her an array of plant-based powers. She then became Poison Ivy, a villain bent on protecting plant life over human life, and has gone head-to-head against Batman as one of his most iconic rogues. During a battle, Batman clipped one of her vines and kept it for himself. Renee Montoya advised Batman to bury Isley underground to protect the city, and he followed through with it. Poison Ivy is alive somewhere in Gotham, but seemingly ineffective.

In Season 3, Batwoman/Ryan Wilder (Javicia Leslie) and her team have been on the hunt for Bat trophies, dangerous items from Batman's rogues gallery that have ended up in the wrong hands. Some of these have included Joker's acid-flower, Bane's Venom pump and Mad Hatter's hat. Poison Ivy's trophy is a vine that can infect others and give them Ivy's abilities, which is what happened in Mary Hamilton's unfortunate case.

Poison Mary has already made her debut in the series and has a character poster featuring her new costume. Mary has been struggling with maintaining control over her life, slipping in and out of her villainous Poison Mary identity. This puts a strain on the team, and Batwoman has had to consider imprisoning her if they didn't get the situation under control.

In the Season 3 midseason finale, "Double Trouble," Mary goes full villain, turning against her teammates and attackin them. An antidote is finally created that could return her back into the person they know and love, but Poison Mary destroys it and escapes with Alice.

How the original Poison Ivy will interact with the new version has yet to be seen, but with Poison Mary setting her sights on Ryan's half-brother Marquis Jet, who has has become the new Joker, there's sure to be trouble ahead.

The CW's Batwoman returns to The CW on Jan. 12, 2022.
