Future Batwoman episodes will see protagonist Ryan Wilder face her biggest challenge yet since putting on Kate Kane's cowl: the return of her ex-girlfriend Angelique Martin.

Actor Javicia Leslie described Angelique to Entertainment Weekly as "Ryan's Kryptonite" and hinted at future problems on the horizon following their awkward reunion at the end of the episode "Fair Skin, Blue Eyes" after years of estrangement. "Should the audience be worried? Yes, be worried," Leslie teased. "Pray for your girl because… Ryan just has so much love and appreciation for Angelique, and I think that she'll continue to forgive her. She'll always forgive her, and that's just a weakness that she has."

According to Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries, Angelique's return to Ryan's life will create some notable issues for her going forward as Gotham City's newest protector. "If Ryan weren't going to be Batwoman and was just going to continue living her life as Ryan Wilder, I think Angelique would be drama for her and they'd fight and things would go haywire. It wouldn't affect Gotham," Dries explained. "But now she's wearing the Batsuit and she has this whole other world of responsibilities. And having someone like Angelique, who's a little shady and can be a little toxic, even though they're in love and she's a good person, that's a problem for the city's hero."

"Fair Skin, Blue Eyes" saw Ryan and Mary (Nicole Kang) attempt to track down a foster child whose kidnapper. Dubbed the "Candy Lady," this kidnapper was someone whom Ryan had a run-in with as a child. It's revealed in flashbacks that the Candy Lady (Linda Kash) actively sought out runaways and foster children whom the system would not miss. She psychologically brainwashed them into thinking she was the only one who cared for their well being before shipping them off to various gangs. Young Ryan survived, however, thanks to Angelique, whom she befriended in foster care and eventually got kidnapped in order to break Ryan out, becoming her girlfriend in the process. Unbeknownst to Ryan, the episode also revealed Angelique to be the woman that Sophie (Meagan Tandy) and Alice (Rachel Skarsten) confronted in the house of a man they were tracking down on Safiyah's behalf in hopes of discovering Kate's whereabouts.

Batwoman stars Javicia Leslie as Ryan Wilder, Rachel Skarsten as Alice, Meagan Tandy as Sophie Moore, Camrus Johnson as Luke Fox, Dougray Scott as Jacob Kane and Nicole Kang as Mary Hamilton-Kane. New episodes air Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
