Batrocitus, created by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, debuted in 2020's Dark Nights: Death Metal #3. He played a small role as one of several alternate Batmen who emerged from the Dark Multiverse, a shadowy mirror of the main DC Multiverse. Batrocitus worked alongside Collector (a mix of Batman and Brainiac) and Night Glider (a subtle amalgamation of Batman and Marvel's Silver Surfer) as guards on New Apokolips, a giant prison housing most of Earth's surviving heroes in Death Metal's gritty dystopia.

When Batrocitus, Collector and Night Glider investigated the ruins of the Trinity Rocket -- a superpowered mecha suit that Wonder Woman, Batman and Harley Quinn piloted to reach New Apokolips -- they fell into a trap set for them by an undead Jonah Hex. Jonah sacrificed himself by detonating an explosive, incinerating all three evil Batmen and buying his comrades the time they needed to break into New Apokolips and free a trapped Superman.

Other than Batrocitus, McFarlane Toys has dug deep into DC Comics lore for more Batman figures based on obscure characters, including another sculpt inspired by 1993's Superman: Speeding Bullets one-shot. The Elseworlds story, written by J.M. DeMatteis and illustrated by Eduardo Barreto, explored a world where an infant Kal-El was discovered by Thomas and Martha Wayne instead of the Kents. Following their death at the hands of Joe Chill, the Waynes' adopted son would avenge them as a Batman with superpowers. Aside from its main character, Superman: Speeding Bullets also featured another intriguing mashup for its villain, who was a blend of Lex Luthor and the Joker.

Other recent McFarlane Toys projects of note include munitions packs -- allowing toy collectors to equip their action figures with the firearms of their choice -- a series of figures based on the "Endless Winter" Justice League story and the resurrection of the classic DC Super Powers line of the '80s, which are currently exclusive to Walmart.
