For the past several weeks, Batman and several familiar faces from Gotham City have been trapped in the world of Fortnite, forced to engage in repeated combat trials against other fighters on the Island. Reborn after each cycle, triggered when only one combatant was left standing or after 22 minutes have elapsed, Batman and the other characters from the DC Universe discovered that their memories eroded in this strange world as all they knew was constant, never-ending combat.

And as the Dark Knight finally breaks free from the cycle, he discovers that someone that came onto the Island with him may be working with those in charge of this violent world.

A standoff between Batman and Deathstroke, with the assassin holding Catwoman at gunpoint to get his longtime adversary to cooperate, revealed that all three characters had regained their ability to speak while remaining on the Island. Teaming up with the other denizens of the Island, Batman led an investigation to learn exactly how and why the Fortnite world has opened a portal to the DCU, with the aquatic fighter Fishstick performing reconnaissance to see if the way to a strange device potentially linked to opening the portal and providing the combatants a way home. However, by the time the Caped Crusader catches up with Fishstick, he finds the fish man mortally wounded with the shocking news that someone in the impromptu team is working with those running the Island before he succumbs to his wounds.

At first glance, the most likely culprit to betray Batman and the team is Deathstroke. With his loyalty only extending as far as his biggest payday, the Terminator could have been contracted to bring Gotham's best and brightest to the Island for the entertainment of those running the gladiatorial games. Previous issues revealed there was email correspondence taking place observing the proceedings, with a particularly keen interest on Batman. The email chain ended just before Deathstroke made contact with the Dark Knight, further lending credence that Slade Wilson may be working with those behind the Island all along.

The other two potential suspects are Catwoman and Harley Quinn, with both seen on the Island after Batman's own arrival. Catwoman has already demonstrated that her old loyalties to Batman do not extend to the Island, fueled by their mutual memory loss due to the world's effects. Lulling the Dark Knight into a false sense of security, Catwoman once cruelly stabbed Batman in one cycle while Harley has been just as chaotic as ever, embracing the possibilities of the Island. That all said, Harley is likely too unpredictable to work with those in charge of Zero Point while both character's recent attempts at redemption would serve counter to this.

Batman has finally begun to regain some of his lost faculties as he actively seeks out a way to escape from the Island and learn how they drew him into this world. But while the Dark Knight may be outside of the cycle and gathering resources to stage a great escape, someone in his team is actively working against him as a mole targeting his allies, intent on keeping him trapped on the Island for good, with Fishstick as his first casualty. And as Batman moves closer to the truth, that body count is only poised to go up.
