The following contains major spoilers for Batman: White Knight Presents: Red Hood #2, on sale now from DC Comics.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the Batman: White Knight universe is how this alternate reality subverted the history of Bruce Wayne and Jason Todd. Here, Jason was the first Robin, with Dick Grayson coming after. However, Jason wasn't killed by the Joker; he fled Gotham as a teen after the clown beat him up and got him to sell out Bruce's secret identity.

Thankfully, Jason and Bruce patched things up as adults after the Azrael incident, which has now led to Jason, an ex-military man, pondering helping the Bat. An older, grisly Bruce escaped prison to try to stop Terry McGinnis and bring down Derek Powers, but Jason isn't sure about his role in this new war. Well, come Batman: White Knight Presents: Red Hood #2 (by Sean Gordon Murphy, Clay McCormack, Simone Di Meo, George Kambadais, Dave Stewart, and AndWorld Design), Jason finally garnered clarity and purpose after remembering the truth about why he hated Bruce.

In this story, Jason helped Gan, a young girl, become a Robin after he left Gotham. He got tired of being a gun-for-hire, so he thought he'd become a better mentor than Batman. Unfortunately, it went off the rails, leading to Gan getting hospitalized. Sure, they stopped the sinister Shriek, but Jason remembered how careless he acted as a Boy Wonder, and that he was, in fact, weaponizing a child now. Ironically, he tried to steal a car to escape, which nodded to his carjacking days when Bruce found and converted him.

But as he stared at the reflection, he saw himself and the Bat. He then lashed out, hating how Bruce let him go and never even bothered to look for him. It was already hinted at when Jason came back quietly and hurt seeing Bruce grab a replacement in Dick just months after. Well, now fans know exactly what the breaking point was; the orphan felt abandoned, betrayed, and ignored by a father who just let him die, in a spiritual sense.

It's a nuanced take, as opposed to the mainstream DCU, or even Titans, where Jason despised Bruce for not killing Joker, or criminals in general. This now adds deep layers to their bond, and the fatherhood he always sought. If the Bat had come seeking him out, it seems like Jason would have resumed duty, feeling loved. Instead, their lives changed forever, giving Jason anger issues as he felt worthless in the years that passed.

Ironically, in the present, Jason used these memories and reconnected with Gan. She accepted his apology, confirming she became a competent fighter in the meantime, while still helping her community in terms of food, shelter and support. This forgiveness ultimately inspired her and Jason to gear up to go help Bruce, because it offers Gan another chance at being a superhero and allows Jason to show Bruce he'd never abandon him in his time of need.
