The following contains major spoilers for Batman: White Knight Presents: Red Hood #1, on sale now from DC Comics.

Jason Todd, Batman's second Robin, has found himself in a mentor position after agreeing to take on a new trainee named Gan.

Batman: White Knight Presents: Red Hood #1 comes from Sean Murphy, Clay McCormack, Simone Di Meo and Dave Stewart. The issue sees an older Jason still traumatized by his childhood interactions with the Joker. Since hanging up his Robin costume and walking away from Batman, Jason has drifted around from place to place without any real sense of calling or purpose.

A Semi-Reluctant Team Up

Jason first meets Gan after he apprehends some criminals who robbed a liquor store. The two don't hit it off at first; however, when Jason is thrown in jail by Dick Grayson/Nightwing, Gan reappears and offers to help him break out of prison. Before he turns down the offer, Gan gets Jason to admit he used to be Robin -- a figure Gan aspires to be as there are a number of super-criminals living in her neighborhood she wants to deal with sooner rather than later.

The two eventually cross paths again in a grocery store after Gan follows Jason around in hopes she can convince him to train her. Gan explains the main super-criminal in her neighborhood is Shriek, a DC antagonist who appeared in several episodes of Batman Beyond. After hearing Gan's story, Jason reluctantly agrees to take her as his new Robin. "I also know what it's like to want to protect the things you care about," he tells Gan. "And what it's like to be let down by people you look up to. So if you're serious about kicking ass, and doing the job yourself...then I can show you what it takes to kick ass."

The remainder of the issue sees Jason train Gan on how to apprehend criminals. While Gan tells Jason she's afraid of heights and isn't necessarily looking forward to jumping off building ledges, Jason eventually realizes they may need to try a new approach. "I can't train you the way I was trained because you're not me," he tells her. "I gotta train you like you. Forget the heights. We're gonna start working on your ground game."
