Though the upcoming Batman vs. Robin event pits Bruce Wayne against his son, Damian, the title will also feature many magic users from the DC Universe.

DC released a comic trailer for the five-issue miniseries, showing panels drawn by Batman vs. Robin artist Mahmud Asrar and narrated by series writer Mark Waid. In the video, Waid name-drops several DC magicians (heroes and villains) involved in Batman vs. Robin, including Zatanna, John Contantine, Etrigan the Demon, Felix Faust and Tannarak, promising readers that "You're going to be seeing as many of the magic characters as we have in the DC Universe." The writer also states that "something is horribly wrong in the magic realm" during the title, with some panels showing Zatanna hanging from a rope, plants protruding from Constantine's body as Swamp Thing watches in horror and more, the root of the chaos said to be Damian Wayne.

How 'Batman/Superman: World's Finest' and 'Robin' Lead Into 'Batman vs. Robin'

The true villain behind Batman vs. Robin will be the Devil Nezha, who Waid introduced in his Batman/Superman: World's Finest series drawn by artist Dan Mora. The two heroes faced Nezha along with Supergirl, Robin (Dick Grayson) and the Doom Patrol during their earlier years as crime fighters, and locked him back into the mystical tomb he had escaped from. The tomb is buried within present day Lazarus Island from the Robin ongoing series, where Damian fought in a death tournament and now seeks to build a sanctuary for lost individuals.

The challenge Damian participated in was called the Lazarus Tournament, hosted by his great-grandmother, Rúh al Ghul aka Mother Soul. The tournament granted fighters involved the ability to be resurrected twice, though their deaths were actually fueling a massive Lazarus Pit hidden beneath the island. Mother Soul tried to unleash Nezha on the world through the tournament and have the demon possess its victor, but her plan was ultimately thwarted by Damian and his allies.

Damian and Bruce Wayne Settled Their Differences Before 'Batman vs. Robin'

Under Nezha's influence, Damian is about to go to war against his father just when the two made amends. Batman and the young Robin reunited during the Shadow War crossover event, a conflict between Talia al Ghul's Demon's Shadow organization and Deathstroke's Secret Society of Super-Villains, where they made peace over the death of Alfred Pennyworth and their differences. As for Damian's mother, Talia is now working as a spy for the Department of Extranormal Operations (DEO) since Robin #15, though she is set to be involved in Batman vs. Robin as well.

Waid closes out the trailer by teasing, "Batman vs. Robin ties very strongly into the future of the DC Universe. There's something that happens in the climax that will affect dozens and dozens of DC characters, minor and major."

Batman vs. Robin will be a five-issue miniseries, with each issue running for around 48 pages each. The title's debut issue releases on Sept. 13, written by Waid with interior and main cover art by Asrar and colors by Nathan Fairbairn. Variant covers for Batman vs. Robin are contributed to by Bryan Hitch, Jason Fabok, Lucio Parrillo, Joshua Middleton, Alexander Lozano, Steve Beach and Dave Rapoza.
