WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Detective Comics #1020, by Peter J. Tomasi, Brad Walker, Andrew Hennessey and Rob Leigh, on sale now.

In his long career as Gotham City's protector, Batman has tangled with some of the most iconic villains in the DC Universe. The criminals that comprise his rogues gallery have plagued the city and its residents for years, and each new attempt has always proven worse than the last. It's true for the Joker, who has gone through different iterations and changes in his dance with Batman, as well as Mr. Freeze and Bane, both of whom nearly brought Gotham down recently in the pages of Detective Comics and Batman, respectively.

And now, it's Two-Face's turn. Over the years, Harvey Dent has been a constant thorn in Batman's side, but the levels of his menace were always, more or less, relatively the same. But, in Detective Comics #1020, Two-Face becomes more frightening than ever before.

Two-Face has often unleashed his brand of terror on Gotham with his crew of thugs. However, in Detective Comics #1020, readers are introduced to a new type of Two-Face follower, ones that wear matching outfits that are one-half black, one-half white, to reflect Two-Face's own classic suit. On their shoulders, they also have patches of the two sides of Dent's signature coin as a logo. But that's not all, they also wear hoods, not just to hide their identities, but to come off in a monk-like manner. Plus, they are each wearing long chains with a coin for a pendant in what is most assuredly meant to evocate a crucifix.

Batman faces these new thugs in a brutal fight, and even he notices they are different. As they attempt to torch a crime scene, the Dark Knight takes note of their devoted nature, and likens it to something "evangelical." Then, when he finally defeats them and starts to question them, he sees just how devoted they are when the thugs each consume a poisonous capsule, committing suicide before they have a chance to talk.

Then, as Batman comes to grasps with Two-Face's evolution, it's revealed what Harvey Dent has really been up to. The villain has somehow recruited a legion of followers, and he has founded a church for them based on his views on duality: The Church of Two. Dent welcomes each of his members into his cult with the saying "two of us," and by giving them two coins, one in their hand, the other in their mouth, almost like some sort of twisted communion ritual.

In this Church, Two-Face has positioned himself as the priest, but he comes off as more of a cult leader. His subjects are numerous, and they are entirely devoted to him and whatever he preaches. This not only transitions him into a more frightening and manipulative figure, but it also makes him infinitely more dangerous. Two-Face has the power to persuade others to his cause, people who will do whatever he asks -- even die for him if needed.
