The following article contains spoilers from "Home" from Superman: Kal-El Returns Special #1, on sale now from DC Comics.

Superman's interactions with his friends following his return to Earth included a moment in the Hall of Justice. During "Home" from Superman: Kal-El Returns Special #1 (by Alex Segura, Fico Ossio, Lee Loughridge, and Dave Sharpe), he took the chance to give an informal tour of the building and its many displays, citing the various victories and defeats the League has gone through over the years and how they have grown better because of it. However, one display in particular probably leaves a bad taste in Batman's mouth.

As it turns out, one of the defeats the Justice League wishes to learn from is the time the League was almost killed by the contingencies Batman created for them in JLA: The Tower of Babel storyline (by Mark Waid, Howard Porter, Steve Scott, Drew Geraci, Mark Propst, and John Kalisz). Superman describes it as a lesson in trust, but one can't help imagining that this is also a way to subtly punish Batman for his mistake.

The Justice League Lost its Faith in Batman

During JLA: The Tower of Babel, Batman's contingency plans for the Justice League were stolen by Ra's al Ghul and used against them, so they would not interfere with his efforts to reduce the human population. In the aftermath of that battle, once the truth was out about Batman's involvement, he left the League, believing it was for the best. This wasn't because he thought he was wrong to make contingencies for everyone, but because he knew they could not function without any trust in one another. An irony that probably wasn't lost on the rest of them.

However, the incident is a bad memory for all of them, as it was a complete betrayal of their confidence in Batman. As Superman explains it though, the display is a reminder that despite a couple of low moments between teammates, they all learned to trust one another eventually. Indeed, Batman still keeps his contingencies at the ready, as many heroes are well aware, but they have accepted that Batman would never use them without good reason. This display might still be a way of teasing him though.

The Tower of Babel Display is an Embarrassment to Batman

The Justice League Learns from Their Mistakes

Looking back, the incident was years ago, and they have moved past it. As such, it may have become a memory that they can all look back on and laugh about. At least to a certain extent. The display was most likely built as a reminder of the importance of trust and forgiveness. However, given the jovial nature the team displayed in the story, there is a good chance they also use it as an excuse to make fun of Batman.

It is just a tall poster of Batman standing over his fallen comrades -- there are only so many ways to interpret that. In addition, despite Batman not believing he was wrong to make these plans to counteract his allies, his plans fell into the wrong hands very easily. As a result, looking at this display must cause him an uncomfortable mix of shame and embarrassment.
