Actor Micheal Keaton will be reprising his role as Batman after almost three decades when The Flash hits theaters later this year, and the actor discussed what it was like to return to such an iconic character after so much time away.

Keaton considered returning to Batman before he was even approached by studio execs at Warner Bros. for a role in The Flash, the actor revealed during an interview on The Jess Cagle Show. "I thought, ‘Boy, what would that be like?’" Keaton said. "And then, coincidentally, there were murmurs, and I got a call from Warner Bros. They wanted to talk to me about something and there were hints of Batman." The actor admitted his curiosity was piqued after being handed a script for the film, though Keaton emphasized the importance of making a quality movie above all else. "It has to be good,” Keaton said. "There’s no reason to do it if it’s not good. It’s not gonna really change anything."

The actor also touched on the difference between playing Batman now versus back when he last donned the Batsuit in 1992's Batman Returns. "It was a job," Keaton said of 1989's Batman. "And then the next one was a job, and I enjoyed it. But then over time — and then the third one, I just couldn’t do. I just thought, ‘Well, this is not good. This is not good. I just can’t do it. I’ll blow my brains out. Just can’t live with myself.’ And so I walked away." The actor went on to mention how he was worn down by the attention of the role over time, saying, "At some point, you’re a jerk if you don’t go [to conventions]. This is a legitimate world. You’re no better or worse than this, but I’m naïve."

As such, in addition to making a quality film, Keaton emphasized having fun in his return to the role -- something the actor said The Flash director Andy Muschietti helped a great deal with. "I just jumped in and had fun," Keaton said. "And why would you not? You know, I mean, director Andy Muschietti is fantastic, and it’s really creative. I don’t know. It’s fun."

Keaton isn't the only returning Batman, however, as Ben Affleck's DC Extended Universe version of the Dark Knight will also be making an appearance in The Flash. The two Batmen will have separate arcs in the upcoming film, with Affleck even saying that he prefers his Batman in The Flash over anything else he's worked on in the DCEU. While footage of either of the Batman incarnations in The Flash has yet to be revealed, Warner Bros. did show off a first look at Keaton's bloody Batman costume during last year's DC FanDome.

The Flash races into theaters Nov. 4.
