WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Batman/Superman #3 by Joshua Williamson, David Marquez, Alejandro Sanchez and John J. Hill, on sale now.

After a devastating confrontation with an infected Shazam, Batman and Superman devised a plan to discover the identity of all six people the Batman Who Laughs had infected with his toxin: the Man of Steel willingly infected himself, but with just the right dosage that he had enough control to go undercover and get answers from the evil Batman from the Dark Multiverse.

Unfortunately for both superheroes, the villain sees right through the deception in Batman/Superman #3. But that doesn't much matter, because the Batman Who Laughs gives Bruce enough information for him to deduce the identity of another one of the infected: Gotham City Police Department Commissioner Jim Gordon. The Dark Knight then rushes over to save his friend and partner in crime-fighting, but it's already too late -- the toxin has taken over Gordon, and he takes his anger out on Batman.

However, the big surprise comes when Jim enacts his own plan to take out the Caped Crusader by activating his secret weapon: Rookie, Jim Gordon's bat-armor, which the commissioner wore during his brief stint as Batman.

Batman Superman 3 Rookie armor return

Following Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's Batman storyline "Endgame," the Dark Knight had apparently died following his ultimate battle with the Joker. However, the powers that be would ensure that another Batman would protect Gotham City. Funded by Powers International and approved by the GCPD, Jim Gordon was selected to carry on the legacy of the Batman. While he had his own cape-less black and yellow costume, Jim's stint as Batman was most widely associated with his robot bat-armor, Rookie. Jim would wear the armor, who would become a robotic sidekick whenever he would step out of it. It was notable for its sleek, unique design and was even teased by fans for looking like a bat-bunny.

The "Superheavy" storyline, which saw Jim operate as Gotham's protector, was part of the 2015 DCYou initiative, a rebrand that wasn't particularly well-received by fans. Eventually, Bruce Wayne would return as Batman, and Jim would resume his position as police commissioner.

Now, Jim and Rookie fight side-by-side once more in the pages of Batman/Superman. However, they're not exactly fighting for the good guys. After being taken off the road by Batman, the infected Jim Gordon calls for his robotic sidekick with the flick of a switch. Before you know it, Rookie blasts onto the scene with canons blazing. Luckily, Batman doesn't have to fight the robot for long, because Superman swoops in and puts his Kryptonian powers to use against the mech armor. As the fight comes to an end, Jim is beaten unconscious and Rookie is now nothing more but bits and pieces.

While this is a short reunion, Batman/Superman #3 still brought the old" Superheavy"-era Batman team together again, even if it was to battle two of the world's greatest superheroes.
