Gotham City's finest will soon get their chance to shine on HBO Max. Matt Reeves' The Batman will get its first spin-off in the form of a series based around Gotham's Police Department. The untitled series will be set in the same universe as the film starring Robert Pattinson and Jeffrey Wright.

News that The Batman is receiving a spin-off helmed by Boardwalk Empire creator and Sopranos writer Terence Winter was plenty tantalizing, but the broader implications the series brings may be even more exciting. While the DCEU was always an unofficial moniker, the interconnected aspect of the universe has recently appeared tenuous at best. This report may finally put the "Extended" in the DC Extended Universe.

It's uncertain, but Zack Snyder's Justice League may very well be the DCEU's swan song for interconnected films. This news gives a sense of the direction that the universe is heading in, which is: separate, parallel universes.

The most interesting part of the HBO Max press release is as follows: "The groundbreaking television series to be written by Winter is set in the world Reeves is creating for The Batman feature film and will build upon the motion picture’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, ultimately launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms."

Given that this show is Matt Reeves' first project after signing his exclusive deal with Warner Bros., this move signals a willingness to build out the DC film universe in an unprecedented way. And it indicates that much more is coming.

“This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a longform format can afford," said Reeves in a statement.

Reeves appears to be building a whole Bat-verse of his own, spanning television and film akin to Marvel with Disney Plus. One would hope this will lead to more Batman spin-offs in the future, including Zoe Kravitz's Catwoman. There are a plethora of other characters like Batgirl or Nightwing that would be ripe for an HBO Max series just like this one.

DC dipped its toes into TV/ film crossovers with Ezra Miller's appearance on "Crisis on Infinite Earths," but this show opens the floodgates. This is the first time where a DCEU film story will continue on television. Hiring one of television's best writers shows they are serious about this venture. The degree to which The Batman characters will appear in the untitled series is unclear, but it's logical to assume there would be some crossover there with Matt Reeves' direct involvement. The show which evokes Gotham Central could be DC's answer to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. but even more connected.

Now we will finally have a fully-formed Bat-verse. The previous Batman spin-offs on TV -- Gotham, Pennyworth, and Batwoman -- were all from disparate universes.Apart from Warner Bros.' potential plans with Michael Keaton, The Batman ushers in a whole new foundation for the Batman mythos to build upon for years to come.

Winter's Gotham police drama will likely be the first of many forthcoming spin-offs designed to augment DC's properties. Expanding upon this, there have been rumors about spin-off movies for Aquaman with The Trench and a Wonder Woman spin-off starring the Amazons. WB's main concern seems to be bolstering its individual brands with supplemental material rather than constructing a meticulously plotted epic a la Marvel's Infinity Saga. If this trajectory holds, it would seem DC is building separate, pocket universes within the larger overall narrative tapestry.
