Dr. Jonathan Crane is one of the most popular and threatening Batman villains in all of Gotham. In his time as the Scarecrow, Crane has committed several horrendous acts and is responsible for the deaths of many. Since his creation, the Scarecrow has specialized in using fear as a weapon, much like the Dark Knight himself. However, Crane has always used his infamous fear toxin for his own personal gain, rather than to help others.

In his attempts to perfect his fear toxin, the Scarecrow has tortured countless victims, forcing them to experience some of their greatest fears. Looking at some of the more drastic things that the Scarecrow has accomplished throughout the years, here is our list of the 10 most frightening things he’s ever done.

10 Craft His Classic Glove

In more recent depictions of the character, Scarecrow has been shown to wear a glove with various needles protruding from the end of each finger. These needles are designed to expose Crane’s victims to various types of his fear toxin. However, while the glove has a practical use for the villain, it also strongly resembles the glove worn by classic horror character, Freddy Krueger. Krueger, most known for terrorizing children in their nightmares, falls very close to the same personality type that Scarecrow does.

While the glove isn’t directly intended to rip off Krueger’s classic look, the similarities certainly help audiences associate just how scary the Scarecrow can be.

9 Sewn His Face Together

During the New 52, certain changes were made to Scarecrow’s origin to really show just how crazy he was. In the present day though, Jonathan Crane is so insane and obsessed with fear that he sews his own lips together so that he himself resembles a scarecrow, even without his mask.

However, Crane kept the stitches very loose, ensuring that he would still be able to speak despite the strings in the way of his mouth. While this change was purely cosmetic, it is definitely one of the creepier things Scarecrow has done, especially in recent years.

8 Experimented on College Kids

After Crane became a licensed psychiatrist, he began experimenting on college kids. Thanks to his standing as a professor, the young adults made great candidates for some of Crane’s earlier theories and formulas.

During this time, Crane put his subjects under immense psychological torture, going so far as to pour spiders all over a student with Arachnophobia, or even shooting one of them. Though he didn’t directly kill any of his students, Crane was immediately fired once word got out about the things he was doing.

7 Murdered His Grandmother

Even before Crane began experimenting on his students, one of his first victims ever was his own grandmother. In his original origin, Crane’s father was often absent, so he spent most of his time being raised by his grandmother. Unfortunately, his grandmother would prove to be a terrible and often abusive individual, contributing greatly to Crane’s own psychological issues.

Many people may recognize Crane for his occasional quirk of speaking in nursery rhyme. This is directly resulting from the trauma that his grandmother put him through as a young boy. Though his grandmother certainly wasn’t the best individual, the fact that Crane murdered her at such a young age is still horrifying.

6 Scarebeast

The Scarebeast is a creature that didn’t directly come about due to Crane’s actions but was still heavily influenced by him nonetheless. In the story Batman: As the Crow Flies, the Penguin actually tricks and manipulates Crane into becoming the beast against his will. Penguin then uses the mutated Crane to do his bidding, typically terrorizing his own henchmen.

In this case, Batman actually helps Scarecrow return to his normal state. Eventually, the Scarebeast would make a return, though not to the same degree as he did originally. While Crane himself wasn’t directly responsible for the creation of the Scarebeast his formulas still played a factor, making the creature one of the more horrifying achievements ever made by the Scarecrow.

5 Kidnapping a Child (And Introducing Him To Venom)

Scarecrow seems to have a knack for experimenting on young people. During the Batman: Heart of Hush storyline, Batman catches wind of Hush’s actions based on what Scarecrow tells him following their encounter. The reason for the encounter though, was that Crane had kidnapped a young Colin Wilkes, hence, catching Batman’s attention.

When Batman arrives at Crane’s location, he discovers that Scarecrow has taken advantage of the young boy’s claustrophobia to send him into a panic. From there, Scarecrow introduces Venom, the drug that Bane uses to increase his size and strength, into Colin’s system and sets him after Batman. While Batman is eventually able to take down Colin without causing any damage, Scarecrow still managed to literally turn a child into a rampaging monster.

4 Extended Paranoia

On several occasions, Scarecrow has introduced a prolonged and harder to detect version of his fear toxin into the bloodstream of several key DC characters. As a result, the exposed character’s mind slowly deteriorates as they grow more and more paranoid with the course of time.

A key example of this story has been shown in several different ways, but even managed to find itself as the plot of an episode of Batman: The Animated Series. While easily one of the more evil and strategic approaches taken by Crane, it is also one of his most frightening tactics.

3 Poisoning All of Gotham

Scarecrow

Like every great Batman villain, Scarecrow has also set his sights on Gotham as a whole. Over the years, he has tried on several occasions to expose the whole city to his fear toxin causing all sorts of chaos in the ensuing mass panic. Though Batman has always been able to stop him before the damage became too great, Crane has come frighteningly close to success on several occasions.

Unfortunately, this plot is common for Scarecrow and has even been seen in stories like Batman, The Animated Series, Batman Begins (2005), and even the Batman: Arkham Knight video game. However, considering just how catastrophic the damage would be should he succeed, these attempt of his are still frightening all the same.

2 Received a Yellow Lantern Ring

Scarecrow Yellow Lantern

During the Blackest Night story, the entire DC Universe was threatened by the Black Lantern Corps. As a result, several other Lantern corps sent out other rings in order to recruit as many members as possible. Of course, a yellow ring, the color associated with fear, found its way towards Jonathan Crane.

Crane, at this point in the DC Universe, was actually immune to any type of fear due to constant exposure to his own formula. With the yellow ring, however, Crane was once again able to experience the emotion. Thus, he was overjoyed for the little time he actually had the ring. Though Scarecrow accomplished little with the weapon, the fact that he was so excited to have it made it evident just how crazy he truly was.

1 Leave Gotham

More recently, Scarecrow has been seen operating out of Bludhaven, rather than Gotham. Following the loss of Dick Grayson’s memories, Bludhaven found itself without a hero to protect it. Realizing this, Crane set his sights on the city, slowly taking over as he set his master plan in motion.

What is truly frightening about this though, is in how close Crane got to Dick Grayson himself. Thankfully, Dick’s memory loss actually saved him from exposing himself or Bruce to Scarecrow, though he definitely came close. Eventually, a different Nightwing would take down Scarecrow thanks to the assistance of Dick Grayson, but there’s no denying how close he truly came to overtaking the city.
