The Batman is still a ways off from becoming a reality but that hasn't kept the rumors from continuing to heat up regarding Ben Affleck's involvement in the project. When it was first announced earlier this year that Affleck had stepped down as director, many began to suspect that his days as the Caped Crusader were nearing an end, and although the actor has continually denied those rumors, they've only gained traction in recent weeks when Affleck admitted he was looking for a way to segue out of the role. Now, a new rumor suggests that Jake Gyllenhaal is all but confirmed to headline The Batman.

According to El Fanboy, Affleck is out, and Gyllenhaal looks all but confirmed to be his replacement. Their source revealed that a few weeks back, it was said that Warner Bros. had an actor waiting in the wings to apply pressure when trying to get Affleck to remain on board. That person looks to have been none other than Gyllenhaal.

"[The Gyllenhaal] news will probably be confirmed, because now Affleck is most likely not coming back. The last few weeks have been clear he wants out. It's a bummer. So I think that is why the JG stuff is leaking harder."

Now, here's where things get interesting. Fans will remember that The Batman director Matt Reeves sent the internet ablaze over the summer when he suggested that the film was not within the continuity of the DC Extended Universe. He later cleared up his comments, stating the film was "of course" set within the DCEU, however, that led many fans to wonder if that still applied should a new actor be brought in to replace Affleck. Apparently, the new Batman will still be the one we've gotten to know in Batman v Superman and Justice League, meaning despite any potential recasting, nothing will change in regards to the DCEU's canon.

The film, which still does not have a release date, is rumored to be a deep exploration into Batman's mythology with Reeves said to be looking to various David Fincher films -- Se7en, Zodiac, and The Game -- for inspiration.
