A film like Tim Burton's Batman Returns holds a special place in the hearts of many Batman and superhero fans as it mixes dark themes with kooky characters that are even darker. Oh, and an added bonus: it's technically a Christmas movie!

As the holiday season approaches, warm up with everything you missed in Tim Burton's Batman Returns. There's plenty of information on Batman Returns' pre-production, like the actresses who could have been Catwoman, or the making of the film itself, but take the time to learn what's in the details.

10 Selina Kyle: Comics Vs Movie

Catwoman licks her paw

The characteristics of movie-Selina Kyle are an amalgamation of different comic book versions over the years. Her complicated feelings for Bruce Wayne/Batman and having a black cat sidekick have been around since nearly the beginning, while issues with her sanity were more recent, as she became so obsessed with revenge that she neglected her panther in Batman #355. Some things that were created for the film were her blonde hair, which carried over into Batman: The Animated Series, and her job as a secretary.

9 Alfred's Rejection Of Vicki Vale's Old Publication

Penguin - man or myth?

At the beginning of the film, a newsie is trying to sell some papers by shouting out about the "possible terror beneath our feet", and tries to get Alfred to buy a copy of the paper. The newspaper in question is the Gotham Globe and Alfred balks at the idea of buying it, calling it "rubbish." But wait, wasn't the Gotham Globe the newspaper that Vicki Vale worked for in the previous film? Why so much disdain? Perhaps it all went downhill after Vicki left.

8 Press Microphone Implies That Gotham City Is Near... Chicago?

Joker in The Dark Knight

When Penguin's Gang strikes the Gotham Plaza during the tree-lighting ceremony, the podium that Shreck stands behind to do his speech is filled with various microphones, with only one having a press logo on it which simply reads "WXRX," which is a Gotham television station. Interestingly enough, there is an actual WXRX, a radio station that broadcasts across Richmond, Illinois which is near Chicago. While Gotham is generally placed in New York or New Jersey, Chicago was where the Nolan Batman movies were mostly filmed.

7 Gotham Could Also Be In Connecticut

Later on in the film, when Penguin is finding out his real name in the Gotham Hall of Records, the building is swarming with press who want the latest scoop on the developing story.

Max Shreck walks out to deal with them and one of the microphones in front of him now has a large nine and the letters "WCTY", another real radio station used for a fictional station in Gotham. This time, "WCTY" is for the country music station that broadcasts in eastern Connecticut.

6 Shreck's 'Shopped Wall Of Photo-Ops

Selina stands in front of photos of Max Shreck and famous people

Right before Selina realizes that Shreck forgot his speech, she's standing in front of photos of Shreck with some famous men. Of the visible photos, we can see Shreck photographed with Ronald Reagan, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, George H.W. Bush, Sammy Davis Jr., and Arnold Schwarzenegger, who went on to play Mr. Freeze in Batman and Robin. What's interesting is that they're clearly doctored from famous photos, which is especially obvious when looking at the Elvis photo as Shreck has replaced Richard Nixon.

5 Batman Kills

right before he kills

While it's pretty common knowledge that Batman doesn't kill (the Nolan films made sure audiences never forgot that), Tim Burton's Batman is a little more cavalier about taking out the bad guys. While he explicitly told the Joker that he was going to kill him in 1989's Batman, and then follows through with it, Batman holds back a tiny bit in Batman Returns. Namely, Batman throws dynamite down the pants of a goon and then punches said goon into a pit where he then explodes.

4  Catwoman Really Could Break Glass With Her Scream

Catwoman screams after falling into a greenhouse

After rebuffing the Penguin's ring and advances, Catwoman gets hooked to his umbrella-copter and flies high above Gotham City, before she manages to free herself. She falls into a rooftop greenhouse, miraculously survives (six lives left), and performs some movie magic: she screams so loud that she shatters the rest of the glass in the greenhouse. It's not just movie magic though. According to science, it's possible if one uses a high volume and frequency that can resonate with the glass so that it breaks.

3 Alfred Serves Cold Soup In December

Alfred serves Bruce vichyssoise, which is supposed to be cold

When Bruce Wayne is doing research on the Penguin and makes his hunch that the circus gang is actually from the Red Triangle circus, Alfred brings him his dinner. Bruce spits it out and says that's cold, to which Alfred replies, "It's vichyssoise. It's SUPPOSED to be cold."

But what is vichyssoise? It's a french soup that mainly consists of leeks, onions, potatoes, cream, and chicken stock, and can be served either hot or cold, though it is most often cold. Either way, Bruce eats it.

2 Rick James And Siouxsie Sioux Crash The Party

Batman Returns Bruce Selina Keaton Pfeiffer

Danny Elfman's score for the film is beyond legendary and anchors the entire film, but Batman Returns has other music. During the Masquerade Ball sequence, where Bruce Wayne hopes to find Selina Kyle, an orchestral composition of Rick James' hit song "Super Freak" can be heard as masked party-goers dance. Then, when Selina makes her entrance, the music shifts into "Face To Face" by Siouxsie Sioux and the Banshees, at Tim Burton's request.

Wideshot of Catwoman flying away and not Danny Devito as Penguin watching

The Ice Princess is dead and everyone blames Batman, but if you're the Penguin, you celebrate with some bubbly and Catwoman. The two were partners in framing The Bat but the relationship quickly sours when Catwoman rejects the Penguin, telling him, "I wouldn't touch you to scratch you." He doesn't take this very well so he tries to hang her with his umbrella-copter. As Catwoman flies away, a quick cut to a wide-shot shows a completely different person in the famous Penguin makeup and costume.
