Joe Barton, the showrunner for HBO Max's upcoming The Batman prequel series, is penning the script for a new Cloverfield sequel.

According to THR, the Paramount Pictures project will be produced by J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot Productions. Little else is known about the film, but it's said that it won't follow the original's found-footage format.

Released in 2008, Cloverfield was directed by Matt Reeves and centered on a group of friends trying to survive as New York City is attacked by a massive monster of unknown origin. It was followed in 2016 with 10 Cloverfield Lane and in 2018 by The Cloverfield Paradox. The former, directed by Dan Trachtenberg, features a woman held in an underground bunker after an apparent disaster that leaves Earth uninhabitable. When she escapes, it becomes more clear that the film exists in the same universe as Cloverfield. As for The Cloverfield Paradox, the Julius Onah-directed project was released on Netflix and explores supernatural attacks across multiple realities, ending with a much larger version of the monster from the first film.

Notably, the new Cloverfield film will be the first in the franchise that's being developed as a sequel and not adapted into one after development was already underway.
