Batman Prequel Pennyworth Casts Its Young Alfred

Pennyworth, the Epix Batman prequel from the showrunner of Gotham, has cast Jack Bannon in the title role as a 20-something Alfred.

Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller has found the lead for his other Batman prequel, Epix's Pennyworth.

Jack Bannon (The Imitation Game, Ripper Street) will play a young Alfred Pennyworth in the upcoming drama about the former British SAS soldier who forms a security company in 1960s London, and goes to work with Thomas Wayne, who's not yet the father of Bruce Wayne.

The Hollywood Reporter describes the Alfred of the Epix series as "a boyishly handsome, cheerful, charming, clever young man from London. Honest, open-faced and witty, people would never take him for an SAS killer. Alfred doesn't know how to reconcile the kindhearted boy he used to be with the cold, calculated killer he was forced to become."

Pennyworth was announced in May, when it was given a 10-episode straight-to-series order by the MGM-owned premium cable network Epix.

Alfred Pennyworth was introduced in 1943’s Batman #16 as Bruce Wayne’s devoted servant and most trusted ally. Although his backstory has changed slightly over the decades, Alfred has fairly consistently been depicted in the comic books as a retired actor and British intelligence officer who serves as Bruce’s valet and surrogate father, but is more than capable of getting his hands dirty when the need arises.

Produced by Warner Horizon Television, the Warner Bros. Television division behind such dramas as Krypton, Animal Kingdom and Longmire, Pennyworth will reunite Heller with Gotham‘s Danny Cannon, who will executive produce and direct the pilot. Heller will write and executive produce.
