The next Batman film appears to be making some headway, at least according to director Matt Reeves. During an impromptu Twitter Q&A filled with Batman-related questions and writing tips, Reeves revealed when filming is expected to begin on the movie. In his first Tweets since November 2018, Reeves answered a few questions that didn’t reveal a whole lot about the film. In fact, the answers were mostly tongue-in-cheek responses, such as confirming that Batman would indeed appear in the film.RELATED: Ben Affleck Reveals If He'd Still Direct A DC FilmA follow-up to that question asked point blank what everyone wants to know: when does The Batman start filming? “Looking like sometime around year’s end,” Reeves replied.

Reeves continued answering questions throughout the night, including citing 1974 neo-noir thriller Chinatown as an inspiration for the film and claiming to have watched it “for the one-millionth time” before writing. He also reaffirmed his love for Darwyn Cooke’s Batman: Ego when a fan thanked him for mentioning the book previously.

This is the closest to concrete information The Batman has had in some time, as those involved have been tight-lipped about the troubled production. Originally announced for 2017, the film was meant to follow Ben Affleck's vision of Batman, with Affleck starring, writing and directing. Reeves joined the film in February 2017 after Affleck stepped down from the director’s chair and began work on re-writing the script shortly after. Affleck was attached to reprise his role as the Caped Crusader until January, when he announced the role would be recast in favor of a younger Bruce Wayne.

The film is said to be a noir-driven detective story and will be placed within the existing DC Extended Universe film continuity. Despite a shaky start, the DC Extended Universe’s films seem to have found their footing with the well-received Aquaman and the upcoming Shazam.

At the time of writing, no casting announcements have been made, and Reeves did not answer any of the many questions about casting or rumors in his Tweets. The Batman is scheduled for release on June 25, 2021.
