When Wally West - the former Kid Flash who became the third Flash - returned to the DC Universe in DC Rebirth, the era of the New 52 came to an end, and a new age began for the heroes and villains of DC Comics. With a renewed sense of hope, Rebirth saw old characters return, new characters get introduced, and entire worlds change.

The Bat-Family may have gone through more changes than any other hero, family, or team during the Rebirth era. Some of the changes were for the better, while others nearly tore the family apart. It is certain that while the Rebirth years may have come to an end, the effects this period has had on the Bat-Family will last for many years to come.

10 Dick Grayson's Identity Crisis

Nightwing Ric Grayson feature

Before Rebirth, Dick Grayson had retired his Nightwing persona and became an agent of Spyral, an UN-sanctioned covert operations agency. With Rebirth, Dick returned to being Nightwing and teamed up with his former friends from the Titans, but a near-death experience at the hands of KGBeast left Dick with amnesia. Dick Grayson became Ric, a Bludhaven taxi driver who liked to hang out at bars for a fair amount of the Rebirth era. After being brainwashed by the Court of Owls and Joker, Dick finally regained his memory, thanks to Batgirl.

9 Tim Drake's Identity Crisis

Time Drake in Young Justice

The third Robin, Tim Drake, was the first Batman sidekick who came into the Bat-Family, not through tragedy but hope. A young Tim Drake saw that the death of Jason Todd had unhinged Batman, and using his own skills to figure out that Bruce Wayne is the Dark Knight, Tim made himself into Robin.

During New 52, Tim became Red Robin, making space for Damian Wayne, but he was back to being Robin when Rebirth happened. After returning from what everyone thought was his own death and a trip through the multiverse with Young Justice, Tim took on a new costume and hero name - Drake. It didn't last long. Within a few issues, he was back to being Robin.

8 Damian Wayne's Friendships

DC Comics Damian Wayne

The son of Batman and Talia al Ghul, nothing about Damian Wayne's life has been normal. He was trained to be an assassin from an early age, and when his mother couldn't control him anymore, she handed the young killer to his father for some strict discipline. As the latest Robin, Damian Wayne has been through quite a lot, including his own death.

In the Rebirth era, Damian finally found friends in his own age range. As the leader of the Teen Titans and one half of the Super Sons, Damian began to find a path forward. After a series of tragedies hit the Bat-Family, Damian started to return to his dark roots, believing that his father's justice method didn't go far enough. As the Rebirth era came to an end, Damian gave up his Robin persona, but what he will become remains unknown.

7 Batgirl's Path Back

Batgirl Oracle

The New 52 age of DC saw Barbara Gordon again become Batgirl, explaining that her paralysis lasted only three years. In the Rebirth era, Batgirl reteamed with her Birds of Prey partners Black Canary and Huntress while also keeping Burnside safe from super-criminals.

When Joker captured and brainwashed Dick Grayson, Batgirl was the one who saved him. Still, during the Joker War, Barbara decided that she is more useful acting behind the scenes as Oracle rather than being on the streets as Batgirl. Returning to her clock tower and taking her computers out of storage, Barbara keeps all of the Bat-Family in contact.

6 The Bat And The Cat

Batman and Catwoman from DC Comics

Batman began Rebirth questioning if he was a good man. For most of the era, the Dark Knight battled not only some of his greatest villains like Joker, Bane, and Penguin but also the Flashpoint version of his father, Thomas Wayne. And though almost all of it, the Caped Crusader had Catwoman at his side. After years of playing, "will they/won't they," the Bat and the Cat finally became an item.

The unlikely couple - a man obsessed with fighting crime and a woman who loves stealing things - became the hot item in the superhero gossip circles. Catwoman and Lois Lane even got drunk together! Sadly, after the events of the Joker War, Batman decided to put the relationship on pause for the time being.

5 A Death In The Family

Batman Death of Alfred

There are many pieces to the Batman mythos, and one of the best known is Alfred Pennyworth, Batman's trusted butler who has always been there for him. No matter what happened to Gotham's Guardian, Alfred was always at Wayne Manor ready with bandages, tea, and a hot and healthy meal ready to go. Every member of the Bat-Family loved and depended on Alfred.

That all came to a tragic end when Bane killed Alfred on the orders of Flashpoint Batman. The man who had raised a young Bruce Wayne after his parents were murdered, who helped every Robin with their homework, who trained Ace the Bathound, is gone, and nothing from Rebirth has had a bigger impact on the Bat-Family than this.

4 Batman's Confidant

Lucius Fox in Batman

With Alfred gone, Batman needed a new person to depend on for up to the minute information, clean suits, and a stern talking-to from time to time. Lucius Fox stepped up to the plate and became the man in Batman's ear. Not only that, but Lucius also went into overdrive, creating new gadgets for Batman to use in his neverending war on crime. All of this ended up making Lucius a target during the Joker War and has led to a strained relationship between Batman and Lucius. In time, the strain will heal, but Batman is on his own for the time being.

3 Old Friends Return

cassandra cain stephanie brown

While Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown - best known as Orphan and Spoiler - showed up during the New 52 years, they didn't play a big part in any stories. That changed when Rebirth began, and both characters joined Batwoman's team alongside Tim Drake, and criminal turned hero Clayface.

Spoiler left the team shortly after Tim Drake appeared to die, focusing her energy on fighting against the Bat-Family as a way to convince them that the superhero life was too dangerous. When Tim returned, Spoiler gave up her crusade against Batman and even joined Young Justice. During the Joker War, Spoiler and Orphan - now back in her Batgirl costume - joined the fight.

2 The Broke Bat

Broke Batman

Batman has always been a rich son from a rich family. His wealth allowed the Dark Knight to fund his endless supply of awesome cars, planes, helicopters, and even rocket ships. He's even used his billions to build secret bases not only for himself but for the Justice League, the Teen Titans, and the Super Sons. What is Batman without his wealth? We're about to find out.

As the Rebirth era came to a close and the Joker War set Gotham City afire, the Clown Prince of Crime used an old plan to steal Wayne Industries from Bruce Wayne. He left Batman with nothing, not a single penny. And while Joker was defeated, Batman is still broke - Lucius Fox now controls the Wayne fortune.

1 The New Problems

Clownhunter Batman

Coming out of Joker War are several new problems for Batman to deal with. Joker's newest sidekick, Punchline, is sure to be an ongoing problem for Gotham City. Clownhunter, a young man who has sworn revenge on everyone who worked for Joker, may think he's doing good, but Batman cannot stand by while this teenager kills people. And now Ghost-Maker, a vigilante that Batman has known since he was a teen, has come to Gotham to battle the Dark Knight. The next age of DC Comics is poised to give Batman a whole new set of troubles to face.
