DC and Marvel have crossed over quite a few times, and during those moments it has been proven that both Superman and Wonder Woman are capable of lifting Thor's hammer, Mjolnir. By virtue of who they are, they fulfill the criteria to be worthy and wield the power of Thor. This raises the question of whether that worthiness extends to the third member of their trinity, Batman. While he is undoubtedly one of the world's greatest heroes, there are many factors about the Dark Knight that could be deemed both worthy and unworthy.

Batman is a figure of absolute justice. He holds on to his principles even in the face of overwhelming pressure and temptation. He faces down the worst that humanity has to offer on a nightly basis and never wavers no matter how horrific his enemies become. And yet despite being so cold, he is also caring in his own way, willing to take in children who were hurt by the world just as he was and raise them up not to be like him, but to be better.

Batman has exhibited worthiness in other ways as well. He sat on the Mobius Chair and wielded it to fight crime on a more effective level. But that one is a poor qualifier as anyone can sit in the Mobius Chair. A better test would be the times in which Batman used a power ring, proving he had the strength of will to overcome great fear and become a Green Lantern. Granted, both of these scenarios are of a different kind of worthiness, but nevertheless they prove that he is an exceptional person. And nearly everyone who has every lifted Mjolnir was exceptional.

However, for all the lives saved, all the temptations refused, and all the proofs of him being a cut above the rest, Batman does have his demons. He fights crime, but it is the result of a trauma that has never truly healed. It stems from a place of anger, not just generosity. Superman and Wonder Woman chose to become heroes because it was the right thing to do, but Batman did so out of pain.

And then there are his moments of weakness. Bruce has been tempted in the past and as the vast multiverse shows, he is not infallible. With the right amount of pressure he can be broken. He has killed in some worlds and if those circumstances were to befall him in the mainstream then there is no telling what could happen. And he hasn't always been fair to those closest to him. He has trust issues, only truly letting in a few. The rest he keeps at arms length and even those he trusts aren't fully safe from his paranoia.

However, in the case of Mjolnir, there is no checklist for worthiness. History has shown that people can fall in and out of the category of worthiness over the course of their lives. If even Thor can be deemed unworthy for a time, then there really is no telling who is and is not fit to wield the hammer. At his best moments, Batman can probably lift Mjolnir, but on his darkest nights he probably couldn't move it an inch.
