The following article contains spoilers from Lazarus Planet: Omega #1, on sale now from DC Comics.

The Lazarus storms have brought a number of unexpected changes to the DC Universe. However, the finale in Lazarus Planet: Omega #1 (by Mark Waid, Riccardo Federico, Mike Perkins, Brad Anderson, and Steve Wands) ended with one last alteration to a major hero. While everyone was scrambling to stop the storms, Batman was possessed by the Devil Nezha, and the event ended with a cliffhanger showing that the Dark Knight was still under his control.

Aside from being an unexpected way to resolve the series, it is also a terrifying prospect. People have tried to brainwash Batman before, but this proves that Nezha has not only dominated Batman's mind completely but may even use his old enemy's body to attack his son, Damian Wayne. It establishes a level of fear for the near future that was never really explored.

Batman Has Been Possessed by the Devil Nezha

Batman Possessed By Nezha

Prior to the start of the event, Batman was severely wounded and nearly died during his fight with the Devil Nezha while trying to save his son. Had Black Alice not been there to siphon some of the Lazarus magic within Nezha into Batman, the Dark Knight would likely be dead by now. Unfortunately, what little magic they managed to take from Nezha was only enough to revive him, but not heal all his injuries. This left Batman in an incredibly weak state as he struggled to help in any way he could.

Unfortunately, the very power that they took from Nezha to heal Batman also gave him a link to Nezha, and the demon ended up transferring his life force to the Dark Knight. He latched onto him like a parasite and transformed him into a demonic bat creature that he could control. The act seemed to restore Nezha's power, as he dismantled several powerful heroes shortly after, and he has retained his wits, so he was able to fool even someone as discerning as Damian Wayne.

Nezha Manipulates Robin

By ending the issue with Nezha lulling Robin into a false sense of security, the story creates a degree of suspense that the rest of the event did not generate. Granted, a massive magical storm was affecting all life on Earth, but it didn't carry the same sense of dread. Fans knew that things were going to change once the resin hit the Earth, but those changes were exciting, allowing them to explore some less-trodden and entirely new parts of the DC Universe. Here though, Batman, one of the strongest-willed heroes, is being used like a puppet by someone who has no mercy whatsoever.

Even worse, he has manipulated events for him to be left alone with Robin, leaving him in a position to harm the young man. The conclusion of this story gives readers an idea about what comes next and a small amount of fear about the damage that Nezha could do. It completely flips the narrative on the problem that started this whole event. This time, instead of Robin being possessed, it is Batman who has fallen into Nezha's clutches. And, Damian Wayne now has to save his father.
