With a director now locked for The Batman, and the previously announced Joe Manganiello seemingly unsure of his future as Deathstroke, there's plenty of room for speculation about what filmmaker Matt Reeves have have planned for Ben Affleck's first solo outing as the Caped Crusader. That's perhaps why when actor Josh Gad tweeted an image of The Penguin earlier this month, it ignited a new round of online rumors. However, the Beauty & the Beast co-star now insists he was "just having some fun."

Asked about the image while on the red carpet of the MTV Movie & TV Awards, Gad laughed off speculation, saying, "Really, I promise! There's nothing to ... there's nothing there."

The actor said that although he hasn't met with Reeves, he's a fan of the director's work, which includes Cloverfield, Let Me In and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. As to whether he'd be up for playing The Penguin, Gad replied, unsurprisingly, "I would absolutely be open to playing the Penguin in the Batman movie."

Pressed as to whether there were "any smoke to this fire," a somewhat-uncomfortable Gad laughed and said, "There's nothing more we need to talk about. It's all ... we'll see."

The Batman stars Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon and Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke. While there's no announced release date, Affleck will next suit up as the Dark Knight on Nov. 17 in director Zack Snyder's Justice League.
