WARNING: The following contains spoilers for "The Symbol," a story from Batman: The Joker War Zone #1 by Joshua Williamson, David Lafuente, Hi-Fi and Gabriela Downie, on sale now.

In Batman: The Joker War Zone #1, the Bat-Family finally joins the fight to help save Gotham City from the Clown Prince of Crime. The members of the team answered the Dark Knight's call in Batman #99, and characters such Nightwing, Batgirl and Batwing have leaped into action. Now, Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown, aka Orphan and Spoiler, have also returned to Gotham, and the two former Batgirls take on one of Gotham's newest villains.

Their goal is to find a replacement Bat-Signal to light up over the Gotham City sky in order to give the people hope once again and to let them know the Bat-Family hasn't abandoned them. But as they set out to do so, they come across the latest addition to Batman's ever-increasing rogues' gallery: a villain who calls himself Hench Master.

Batman Joker War Hench Master

Hench Master has a physical presence that could nearly rival that of the hulking Bane. Like Bane, he also wears a costume that is primarily comprised of wrestling tights. His are brown-red, and his mask hides only the bottom half of his face. His upper body is covered in tattoos -- the biggest of which reads "no joke" -- and he wears green elbow guards and red fighting gloves. This is a man who is ready to fight, hand to hand.

But Hench Master isn't just a physical presence -- he also fills a much-needed role in Gotham: he recruits and dispatches henchmen to the city's biggest villains. As he explains it, he is "the guy behind the guy."

Throughout the years, we've seen Gotham get attacked by the Riddler, Joker, Penguin, Mister Freeze, Bane and many, many more villains. And nearly every single time, these villains were flanked by a legion of faithful followers, disposable henchmen who follow their every command and who fight the Dark Knight whenever he shows up to stop their boss' latest schemes.

Right now, as the Joker War engulfs Gotham City in flames, Hench Master is preparing a new group of recruits to join the Joker's army. As part of their training, he puts them to a theft challenge in a storage unit park, but they are eventually interrupted by Orphan and Spoiler.

When the two vigilantes show up, Hench Master instructs his trainees to defeat Spoiler and Orphan to prove themselves, but Cass and Steph are simply too much for them to handle. Even Hench Master gets in on the fight, but Spoiler just ends up smashing him through a metal door.

As the story comes to a close, Hench Master is defeated, but it's almost certain he will return. After all, there will always be a need for good, disposable henchmen in Gotham City, and Hench Master is the perfect character to fill that role.
