In addition to the disappearance of Kate Kane and the debut of Javicia Leslie’s new Batwoman, Ryan Wilder, the Season 2 premiere of Batwoman also featured the team going up against a Batman impostor. In the final moments of Season 1, Alice (Rachel Skarsten) gave Tommy Elliot (Warren Christie), the deranged Batman supervillain known as Hush, one of her special flesh masks (made with actual flesh) that made him look exactly like Bruce Wayne, his childhood friend and the object of his obsession.

In the Season 2 premiere, Tommy’s impersonation of Bruce almost led to disaster for Team Batwoman. Although the show took it in a new direction, the idea of Tommy transforming into a Bruce look-alike is rooted in the character’s comic book history.

“Heart of Hush” featured in Detective Comics #846-850, by Paul Dini, Dustin Nguyen, Derek Fridolfs, John Kalisz, Travis Lanham, Steve Wands, John J. Hill, and Jared K. Fletcher, and served as a sequel to the original “Hush” arc. The story was published at the same time as "Batman R.I.P." and saw Tommy hoping to kill Bruce before the Black Glove could do so. It also expanded upon Tommy’s backstory, giving him more depth. To draw Bruce out, Tommy attacks Catwoman. He removes her chest from her body but leaves her on life support. With Doctor Mid-Nite and Mister Terrific waiting to operate on Selina, Bruce goes to confront Tommy, only to learn that Tommy has given himself plastic surgery to make himself look like Bruce. Although he’s aware the disguise is not perfect, he believes it will be suitable for his purposes. He plans to infiltrate Wayne Manor and kill Alfred and the Bat-Family using the element of surprise. However, Bruce can escape and get Selina’s heart back, after which he follows Tommy to Wayne Manor and warns Alfred of the impending attack. Tommy battles Bruce in the Batcave and is close to beating him when Nightwing and Robin arrive. Tommy attempts to escape on the Whirly-Bat and crashes. However, the Bat-Family is unable to find any trace of his body.

After recovering from surgery, Selina seeks payback and steals all of Tommy’s assets. She was later able to track him down and subdue him, turning him over to Nightwing and Robin, who detained him in a safe house. Tommy later escaped, but, knowing the entire superhero community would be looking for him, he eventually agreed to a deal with Dick Grayson and Tim Drake, who ordered him to play the part of Bruce, as Bruce himself would, so the public didn’t realize that Bruce had vanished at the same time Batman did in "Final Crisis". While he served this purpose for a while, Tommy eventually tried to get out from under the Bat-Family’s thumb by siding with Ra’s al Ghul, but Tim was able to have all of Bruce’s wealth and resources transferred to him, leaving Tommy with nothing.

The Arrowverse’s Tommy was much less effective at using the Bruce disguise. He was successful in obtaining a Kryptonite shard, as Alice had sent him to, but Alice herself no longer had use for it, as Kate’s disappearance disrupted her plans for revenge on her family. And although Tommy managed to fool Luke Fox (Camrus Johnson) and Mary Hamilton (Nicole Kang) into believing he was Bruce, Julia Pennyworth (Christina Wolfe) quickly recognized him as an impostor and identified a fingerprint he had carelessly left behind.

After a falling out with Alice, Tommy set out to steal the Bat-suit for himself but was defeated by Ryan Wilder, despite her having no experience as a crime fighter and him being armed with the Batmobile. While Ryan was beating him, the flesh mask came off and Tommy was returned to Arkham, so the Bruce disguise is no longer viable, even if the character does return to the series.
