WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Batman #103, by James Tynion IV, Carlo Pagulayan, Danny Miki, Guillem March, David Baron and Clayton Cowles, on sale now.

During the Joker War, Bao Pham took matters into his own hands and suited up as Clownhunter. The boy may be just a teenager but, throughout the event, he proved to be a lethal new addition to the Gotham City vigilante scene. Clownhunter lived up to his name by making it his mission to rid the streets of anyone who wore a clown mask and followed the Joker, a crusade that has kept going, even if the war itself has come to an end.

Indeed, Bao is now targeting every regular citizen who put on a mask during the "Joker War," including normal people who went back to their normal lives. But he's not stopping there. In Batman #102, he also made it clear Harley Quinn was one of his targets. And now in Batman #103, he finally goes after her. But Clownhunter learns the hard way that he is far from being in the same league as Harley Quinn.

Harley Dodge Clownhunter

When the Joker and his goons transformed Gotham City into a literal war zone, Clownhunter protected his neighborhood, the Narrows, by brutally killing any clown who dared venture there. His primary weapon was a bat adorned with one of the Dark Knight's Batarangs, but he also showed ingenuity (and cruelty) when he also killed several clowns by burning them alive or blowing them up. He became a hero of the people, and he earned a reputation that made all clowns frightened of him, even the Joker himself took notice.

And it's possible Clownhunter has let this level of "success" get to his head. Indeed, in Batman #103, the young vigilante attempts to take out Harley Quinn, a major Gotham City villain turned occasional superhero. Harley may not have any superpowers to speak of, but she has gone through her fair share of fighting, whether by herself, as part of the Suicide Squad or alongside the rest of the Bat-Family. She is a skilled fighter and unquestionably one of the most dangerous women in the DC Universe.

Unfortunately, Clownhunter ends up mistaking Harley Quinn for yet another easy target to put down, while Harley is anything but.

Clownhunter Bat-Bat

Bao swings his bat into combat, but his opponent uses all of her finesse and skills to avoid him. In fact, Clownhunter spends the entirety of the fight swinging and missing: as Harley avoids every one of his blows, he hits nothing but air and whatever else is around them. Worse still, she continually teases him, showing he's no credible threat to her.

When she finally decides it's time to put this "fight" to an end, Harley puts Clownhunter down with only a few hits, and she even proceeds to tie him up -- just as a good superhero would do. While Harley intends to deliver the boy to the police, she is then interrupted by Batman and the Ghost-Maker, who are locked in a fight themselves. Ghost-Maker knocks Harley out, which means Clownhunter hasn't been apprehended just yet.

But even if he manages to get away, Clownhunter has just suffered a pretty humiliating defeat. This is bound to be a humbling experience for the young vigilante, and it may even force him to realize he needs a lot more training before he can move on to bigger targets. For now, Clownhunter might be better off sticking to taking down regular clowns.
