As the Magistrate, the Peacekeepers, and Cybers continue to place their knees on the necks of what they perceive to be hostile, recalcitrant citizens in a broken Gotham City, vigilantes are quickly becoming compromised. It's a matter of do-or-die with people like Jason Todd and Ravager breaking principles and turning on their own to survive by hunting masks down.
Come Future State: Dark Detective #3, yet another traitor is unveiled and it results in the takedown of an iconic vigilante.
In the Grifter back-up story, Cole Cash is working with Huntress to get Luke Fox out of Gotham. Luke, who once donned the Batwing suit, knows that despite being part of the Fox family that's working with the Magistrate to supply tech and weapons, true freedom lies outside the city. Huntress is reluctant at first but Luke's paying well, so the trio agrees to a deal.
However, the Peacekeepers find them and an explosive chase occurs, which culminates with the heroes using another vigilante, Veil, for safe passage to the docks. There, Helena reveals a super-fast submarine that's undetectable by the Magistrate -- ironically, one of Lucius' creations before he broke bad. But just when Cole thinks he's about to cash in, Luke turns out to be an informant. Drones, Peacekeepers, and the whole calvary arrive as we discover Luke brokered his own deal to erase his past. The trap was to get Huntress, aka the Queen of Clubs, for the Magistrate, but seeing as Cole protected him, Luke secretly offers a lifeline.
Cole can get in the sub and escape, while Luke trades in Huntress to clear his name. Admittedly, Grifter gets in and contemplates leaving, but his conscience won't let him do this to a fellow hero. As a result, he gets back on the pier and in a high-octane war, he rescues Huntress, knocks her out, and places her in the vessel. He sets her on her way, and tries to buy time by fighting off Luke and Co.
It ends with Huntress escaping and Grifter being taken into custody. That said, Luke's pissed as he has a bond with Cole, who was hired after Joker War to protect the Fox family, but ultimately, Cole doesn't sell his soul like Luke and the other mysterious, corrupted double agents we're yet to discover. It's pretty disappointing to see Luke fall from grace, turning into a crooked politician with a forked tongue, leaving fans wondering if he can ever redeem himself and the Bat-symbol he once wore.
