WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point #2, by Donald Mustard, Christos Gage, Reilly Brown, Nelson Faro DeCastro, John Kalisz and AndWorld Design, on sale now.

The crossover between the Dark Knight and Fortnite began when Batman fell into a mysterious portal that appeared in Gotham City. He ended up on Fortnite island with no memories, and no longer possessed the ability to speak. He died when one of that world's storm closed in on him, later waking up with no memories of his death or how he ever arrived on the strange island.

However, as Batman fought and died repeatedly on island, he began to realize that something wasn’t quite right. He left notes for himself and created his own makeshift Batcave complete with a note board. He also left notes on his costume and on a batarang that he eventually gave to Catwoman to help her understand what was going on.

This scenario bears a strong resemblance to the movie Memento. Before Christopher Nolan gained mainstream popularity with his Dark Knight Trilogy, he gained a breakthrough success with his second movie, Memento. While Nolan’s first movie, Following, created a movie fractured and told out of order, similar to Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, he took a different approach with his second attempt. Nolan told the story backward in Memento, opening with a Polaroid photograph of a murdered man. The film then moved backward to unravel the mystery. The storytelling device used in this movie was that the main character, Leonard, suffered from short term memory loss and was unable to form new memories.

In Memento, Leonard struggles to solve a murder mystery without the benefit of his short term memory. In order to compensate for his lack, he tattoos clues onto his body, leaves notes for himself, and keeps Polaroid photographs he knows he can later piece together to decipher what is happening.

Batman on Fortnite island

This is the same thing that is happening in the Batman/Fortnite comic. Batman knows he is reliving the same period of time over and over, but his instincts and emotions remain intact. At the beginning of the second issue, Batman doesn't remember who he is, but finds a message written on his armor that provides clues that he can then piece together in a way similar to what was seen in the Nolan film.

Batman's detective skills and intuition allow him to gain a working understanding of his predicament based on the assortment of clues he has left for himself. Although he has been able to escape from Fortnite island, he is able to use what he has learned to help someone else escape. Although things may look bleak at the moment, the Dark Knight Detective is proving to be as resourceful as the protagonist of Memento in his struggle to solve one of the most challenging mysteries he has ever faced.
