Batman's rogues are usually seen as some reflection of the hero and his crusade against crime. But one of his newest enemies is a specific contrast to him, and it makes her one of the more interesting antagonists he's run into in some time.
The full backstory of the mysterious Equilibrium has just been revealed in Batman: The Detective #5 (by Tom Taylor, Andy Kubert, Sandra Hope, Brad Anderson, and Clem Robins), and it sets her up as an ideal contrast to the Dark Knight.
Equilibrium has been the primary antagonist throughout Batman: The Detective. Wearing a stark white variant of the classic Bat-Suit, she and her forces have been making their way across Europe, targeting people who've been saved over the years by the Dark Knight. Ruthless and well-trained, Equilibrium has forced Batman to race across Europe in a bid to protect as many lives as possible. Their latest encounter resulted in Batman going up against all of her allies after confronting her during a hostage situation. While many of her forces were captured in the ensuing conflict, Equilibrium was able to escape. However, during their brief fight, Batman identified just how deadly of a fighter she is, utilizing numerous skills designed by some of the world's most dangerous figures.
By piecing together the clues, Batman and Squire return to Paris to speak with Henri Ducard, who confirms the Dark Knight's suspicions: it turns out that Ducard had trained one other person to the level he had with Bruce Wayne. Her name was Charlotte Le Serf, a naturally brilliant and gifted student for Ducard. The one difference was that Charlotte was perfectly fine with committing murders, setting her up for a lucrative life as a free agent in the world of espionage. She vowed that she would only take on assignments that could help the world become a better place, and did so until she got the chance to start a family. But then, a chance encounter with a man named John Gallagher changed everything.
Driving drunk one night, Gallagher struck Charlotte's car -- killing her husband and infant son upon impact. Murdering the man in revenge, Charlotte learned more about him and discovered that he'd actually come close to death years before he would ruin Charlotte's life -- only to be saved by the Caped Crusader. Blaming Batman for Gallagher's survival and his ensuing actions, Equilibrium dedicated herself to targeting Batman and evening the scales for all the lives he saved over the years. She sees Batman as an agent of chaos, sending unintended ripples through the world with his actions. For every life he saves, others are doomed -- and now, as Equilibrium, Charlotte intends to make sure the world sees him the same way.
All of this gives Charlotte a great deal of potential as an enemy of Batman. She's in many ways the person Bruce Wayne could never become -- someone who is willing to kill, but also willing to put aside their mission for love and family. And like Batman, the loss of that family has driven her to embark on a very dangerous mission. She's also the personification of a long-standing criticism of Batman. Countless people over the years have asked if Batman is to blame for the loss of life his mercy has allowed, and Equilibrium is that question personified. It paints her as a deadly match for Batman in terms of not just skill, but wits and drive. Hopefully, this new antagonist will survive the events of Batman: The Detective, as she'd make a compelling contrast for the Dark Knight to continue fighting against.
