Batman Director Says Film Will Begin Casting Villains Soon

As the DC Extended Universe begins production on the Gotham City-based ensemble film, Birds of Prey, Batman writer and director Matt Reeves has provided an update on his long-developing solo film for the Caped Crusader.

While promoting the Fox television series, The Passage, which he executive produced, Reeves confirmed that pre-production on Warner Bros.' planned Batman solo film is continuing to move forward while Reeves is the midst of another rewrite of its screenplay.

"There will be a Rogues Gallery. The casting process will begin shortly," explained Reeves in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "We're starting to put together our battle plan. I'm doing another pass on the script and we'll begin some long-lead stuff to start developing conceptual things."

Previous reports had indicated the Penguin would be a major antagonist in the film, with Reeves' comments suggesting more than one villain would appear in the upcoming film in some capacity.

"We haven't [received a release date]. I wouldn't commit to this, but we're thinking the movie would probably be for 2021, late spring or summer," continued Reeves. "Warner Bros. has been incredibly supportive and given me a lot of time and shared the same passion that I do for this story."
