The following will include major spoilers for Batman: Last Knight On Earth.

Scott Snyder, alongside artist Greg Capullo, imagines what would've become of his iconic New 52 Batman run years down the line with the standalone series, Last Knight On Earth. Set in a post-apocalyptic future, the story finds the Dark Knight on a journey to uncover his past and confront the entity that destroyed the world in the first place. However, all is not as simple as it seems and there are plenty of twists and turns Batman fans may not know about.

10 Batman Snuck Into Themyscira For Unknown Reasons

When devising a plan to sneak into Gotham's most secured section, the Dark Knight lets it slip to Wonder Woman that he snuck into her home island, Themyscira. Although he had only known the territory as Paradise Island, it's an incredible achievement that virtually no human had accomplished, at least on purpose.

The purpose of the visit is not disclosed, however, readers will have the feeling that he was not there to make friends with the Amazonian warriors.

9 Spectre Faced A Fate That Broke The Line Between Life And Death

As humanity declined into chaos, the Spectre himself faced a fate that broke the line between life and death, literally. With only his gigantic cloak left, Batman and Wonder Woman can sneak underneath to travel through the river of the dead, also known to us mortals as limbo.

This harrowing scene is followed by an even darker moment when it's revealed that those in limbo see people that are in there because of them. For Batman, it's almost every superhero imaginable, whose deaths he feels directly responsible for.

8 An Abundance Of Power Rings Fell To Earth

When the sentient planet and Green Lantern Mogo is killed by Brainiac, an abundance of power rings fall to Earth. Due to the fact that these rings bear no owners, it becomes a literal free-for-all to any of those who want to yield those incredible powers. The horrifying situation only worsened the state of the planet and further pushed humanity to a breaking point.

Although it's not clear what happened to the rest of the Lantern Corps, it's not unlikely that more fan-favorite heroes faced a similar fate as Mogo.

7 Several Versions Of The Flash Are Stuck In A Destructive Storm

Several versions of The Flash have been sucked into a speed force storm that destroys anything in its path. The art reveals Barry Allen, Jay Garrick, Wally West, and Bart Allen are the ones that make up the devastating force, teasing what could've also happened to the rest of the speedsters.

It's an especially grim fate when you take into account they are constantly in pain and desperately call out for help when Batman is nearly sucked into the tornado of destruction.

6 The Joker Becomes Robin

In a moment that surely divided fans' emotions, the Joker, at least what's left of him, takes up the mantle of Robin after hanging on Batman's side throughout the story. And it's not just for a moment; the Last Knight On Earth firmly ends on the idea that the Clown Prince of Crime is the next in line as the Dark Knight's partner.

Despite the concept of Joker, the man who killed Jason Todd, becoming Robin being divisive, Snyder makes a worthy attempt at redeeming him. His words eventually spark the fire Bruce Wayne needs to believe in himself and his purpose, evolving their relationship to a level fans have never seen.

5 Dick And Barbara Have A Child Together

In a post-apocalyptic Gotham City, the remaining heroes of the Batfamily fight the good fight as the Court of Owls. This includes the daughter of iconic heroes Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon, Bryce Grayson. Although she isn't a major part of the story, Bryce is set up as the next Batgirl in this reality.

It's unclear whether or not the main continuity will consider this route in the future, but it was interesting to see what could come out of a long-term Babs and Dick relationship, especially during an apocalypse.

4 Lex Luthor Is Superman's Biggest Fan

After a convoluted debate between Superman and Lex Luthor leads Earth towards a downwards spiral, the villain does all he can to bring back the Man of Steel. See, during their final battle for the world, the archenemy is so moved by Kal-El's hopeful speech that he vows to overturn his own evil decision to kill the Kryptonian.

However, his body can't be resurrected, so Luthor spends all of his time attempting to create a time portal that allows for a baby Superman to crash onto their timeline.

3 Batman's New Robin Is A Horse

Although Batman doesn't necessarily make it official, the horse he rides on in the story is seemingly briefly granted the mantle of Robin. It dies rather quickly due to the Flash storm, but its sacrifice is very much in line with any great sidekick.

This discussion is prompted in the first place by the head of Joker, who takes advantage of the horse's moment to justify his own ambitions as the Dark Knight's future Robin.

2 The Joker Manipulated Batman Into Believing Joe Chill's Actions Were Justified

When Batman investigates the death of a child, he finds out the DNA matches that of Joe Chill, the man who shot down both of his parents. He confronts Chill, revealing he has a kid in the process, but later finds out that it was Thomas Wayne who had killed the boy while drunk during a simple surgery. Bruce is horrified and realizes Chill didn't shoot his parents randomly that one night; he acted out of revenge for the death of his son.

However, it is revealed that the Joker, pulling out all of the stops including Project Cadmus, had tricked him into thinking this was the truth. It was meant to be a moment of strengthening for the Dark Knight, but it was a part of the reason he became a broken man in the apocalypse.

1 This Version Of Batman Is A Clone Of Bruce Wayne

Batman carrying the Joker's head in a jar in Last Knight on Earth.

The hero of the story, a Dark Knight sporting his Rebirth threads, is not actually the Bruce Wayne people know and love, well, sort of. In a direct callback to the Scott Snyder run, Bruce Wayne's mind is transferred to a young clone body in accordance with his grand plan during the New 52. This is the one people follow throughout the Last Knight On Earth and although he's is not the original Batman, he might as well be.

The real Bruce Wayne was corrupted long before the events of the series, becoming an unrecognizable presence in the present, apocalyptic time. The clone readers follow still has the righteous thirst for justice fans are familiar with that makes him the perfect hero for the story Snyder and Capullo tell.
