It was revealed a month ago that a new villainous character will be introduced in DC's milestone 1000th issue of Detective Comics, albeit one who might be familiar to video game fans: the Arkham Knight. It's noteworthy because Arkham Knight was the titular villain in the third chapter of Rocksteady's blockbuster video game series that launched with Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Now, with the creative lineup of the landmark issue officially announced, we also have our first look at the Arkham Knight of the DC Universe.

The image reveals a character who looks strikingly similar to his video game counterpart. He wears an armored costume, complete with identical mask and logo. Perhaps the biggest difference here, so far, is the added sword.

In Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham Knight, the mysterious new villain was labeled as the main antagonist. But as players advanced through the story, they discovered that while the Arkham Knight identity was a new addition to the Batman mythos, they were actually familiar with the man under the mask: Jason Todd, aka the Red Hood.

In current comics continuity, Jason Todd has left Gotham City behind, and he is operating under a new codename: the Outlaw. Therefore, it's unlikely that the comic book version of the Arkham Knight will be the same. Instead, it appears as if Detective Comics #1000 will debut a mystery of its own, one to mirror the one from the video game: who is the Arkham Knight?

DETECTIVE COMICS #1000 is highlighted by an original story from the team of writer Peter J. Tomasi and artist Doug Mahnke that not only launches a new story arc but introduces a new version of the Arkham Knight to DC comics canon. Tomasi is no stranger to this character, having written his video game origins in 2015’s BATMAN: ARKHAM KNIGHT – GENESIS miniseries.

Detective Comics #1000 will feature a main story by the new creative team of the title, Peter J. Tomasi and Doug Mahnke. The anniversary issue is also set to feature bonus stories from the likes of Geoff Johns, Brian Michael Bendis, Paul Dini, Christopher Priest, Denny O’Neil, Neal Adams, Kelley Jones, Dustin Nguyen and Alex Maleev. The issue is slated for release in March 2019, with more details still to come.
