The famed Batman story, Death in the Family, was a fairly controversial storyline that affected the Dark Knight for years to come. It stands out, primarily, because writers killed Jason Todd, the second person to take on the mantle of Robin.  The choice to kill Jason was made by fans, who did not like him as Robin.

In Batman: Death in the Family, Warner Brothers Animation once again gives fans the chance to pick what happens to Jason Todd. Fans get to re-write history via an interactive storyline, where the choices one picks, lead to more choices of consequences. If the fans choose to let Jason die, Bruce Wayne essentially narrates the events of Batman: Under the Red Hood, just as they played out in the movie. It is then revealed Bruce has been telling this story to non-other than his pal Clark Kent, Superman, while they're both hanging out in a dinner. Suprise cameo! But what about the other choices? The "What if"?

8 Jason Survives the Explosion

If the fan chooses to save Jason, they actually get to pick from two more options. The first one is that Jason survives the explosion, despite being caught in the blast. Batman then takes him back to Wayne Manor, but Jason suffers some form of mental trauma from the experience, forcing him to believe Bruce Wayne is the source of his problems and that he's just as bad as the Joker.

As a result, he escapes Wayne Manor and takes on a Hush-like persona with the Robin "R" on his chest. He goes around killing villains in Gotham, which causes Batman to chase him but without success. This choice ends with Talia Al Ghul handing Jason a baby Damian Wayne, whom Jason gladly accepts if it means he can corrupt Batman's true progeny.

7 Jason Lives/Batman Dies

If fans pic to save Jason from the explosion, they find that the cost is Batman's life. Although Jason is relatively unscathed Batman suffers third-degree burns and trauma from the blast, which kills on site. From here on, he tells Jason to be good, and remember what he fights for.

This gives fans the option, as Jason Todd, to either go get revenge on the Joker or to stay true to Bruce's words and find peace, not going after the Joker.

6 Jason Doesn't Go After The Joker

If Jason chooses to heal the way Batman wanted him to, not going after the Joker for revenge, he stays in Wayne manor and takes a hiatus from fighting crime. He and the rest of the Bat-Family bury Bruce, and Nightwing becomes Batman. Jason then seems to be coming to terms with the ordeal, after hearing Batman stories from different members of the Justice League about how a "guy with no powers" was the best of them.

Eventually, Jason goes into a dinner, where he hears one last Batman story, from a man who claims he knew Batman. This turns out to be the Joker, gone sane due to a lack of Batman, and it is here that Jason discovers that the person next to him is the man he promised not to go after. It's only after Joker tells him his story - which is the joke from the Killing Joke storyline - that Jason reveals he's Robin and sticks a table-knife in Joker's eye. This leads to a memorable Joker death, as the Clown Prince of Crime laughs maniacally before wiping the make-up off his face, and giving one last smile.

5 Jason: Turns Himself In/Escapes The Cops

After Jason kills the Joker, the police show up with guns pointed at him. Jason disarms both police officers but is then given a choice: escape the police, or turn himself in. If fans choose to have him turn himself in, he is arrested and taken to Blackgate prison. Here, he believes he did the right thing killing the Joker, and decides to serve justice within Blackgate, as Jailbird (a new Robin persona invented for the movie).

But, if Jason chooses not to turn himself in, he escapes the cops and takes on the Red Robin persona. As Red Robin, however, he goes around killing criminals in Gotham, rather than being the detective Tim Drake was. This choice leads to Jason, fighting Two-Face in a shopping center. Jason gets trapped under some rubble, where Two-Face has him in a perfect position to get shot.

4 Two-Faces Chooses To: Kill Jason/Let Jason Go

Fans get to pick what happens to Jason (Red Robin), once he's at Two Face's mercy. They essentially get to choose whether the double-sided coin lands head or tails. if fans pick tails, two-Face essentially decides to pull-back on killing Jason. He thinks Jason must be hurting pretty bad on the inside if he's strayed so far from batman's beliefs. He believes letting Jason live is better than killing him, and walks away. This path ends with Jason realizing what a perversion of Batman's believes he's become.

If the coin lands heads, Two-Face chooses to kill Jason, believing he's doing Gotham a favor. But before he's able to pull the trigger, none other than a young Tim Drake whacks Two-Face in the Back of the head. He then tells Jason he's strayed from the path Batman wanted him to be but believes there's still hope. Jason realizes he's perverted Batman's beliefs but feels encouraged to turn over a new leaf. He then takes on Tim Drake as his sidekick, and fans get to see Tim Drake wearing a Batman-like costume, that's more in tune with Batboy.

3 Jason Goes After the Joker

Red Hood Joker Death In The Family DC

If Jason chooses to after the Joker, the same events play out as Jason not going after the Joker, up until the point where Jason takes a hiatus from crime-fighting. Instead, Jason becomes the Red Hood and decides to lure out the Joker by committing prank-like crimes against Gotham's criminal underworld. The choice leads to the bridge scene from Batman: Under the Red Hood. Jason reveals to the Joker he's the Red Hood, and Joker laughs and says he's proud of Jason for becoming just like him.

Joker then tells he's impressed by the way Jason committed his crimes, where it's revealed that the prank-like crimes all resulted in people dying and that Jason was repressing the memories. Joker crawls towards Jason, who's pointing a gun at him, and asks him, "Who's your daddy?"

2 Jason: Shoots the Joker/Doesn't Shoot The Joker

Joker Death In The Family DC

Fans then get to pick whether Jason shoots the Joker or not. If he does, Jason shoots the clown prince right before the cops rush in to find a dead Joker. Commissioner Gordon tells Barbara of what's happened, Dick Grayson (Batman) closes Joker's file, and Harleen Quinzel sheds a tear as she watches the Joker's body get cremated.

If fans choose not to kill the Joker, Jason hits Joker with his gun, disappears from the scene, and the police capture a tied-up Joker telling a Humpty-Dumpty like rhyme about Robin. Jason tries to ask forgiveness from Barbara for not being able to kill the Joker, and Dick chases Jason for his crimes. Jason becomes a wanted fugitive, spending his time running from the law.

1 Jason: Saves Batman/Kills Batman

Talia Batman Death In The Family DC

Eventually, Jason finds himself on the rooftop of Wayne Enterprises, where he is confronted by Talia Al Ghul and a resurrected Batman, who is dressed as the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh. Talia asks Jason to join her in the League of Shadows, but Jason refuses and is forced to fight Batman. Here, fans get to pick whether Jason kills Batman or not, in the fight.

If they choose to kill him, Jason stabs him in the chest with his knife, before Batman pulls out a bomb that kills both Jason, Batman, and Talia. If fans choose to save Batman, Jason tases Bruce unconscious, before knocking out Talia. Dick finds them and takes both Jason and Batman to the Batcave. The film ends with Jason deciding to finally take time off to heal, and Barbara becoming Oracle, assisting Dick as he becomes Batman. Bruce is then shown to be suffering mental damage from the resurrection, and the film ends with him repeating the words Zur-En-Arrh.
