The character, Dick Grayson, has been around for decades. In that time, Dick's character has been reinvented on certain occasions. As he grew, he stopped being Robin and stepped into the role of Nightwing. He has even used the name Batman a few times.

Part of this reinvention has included the occasional death. Dick has had his fair share of deaths and near-death experiences, just like many comic book heroes. His mentor, Batman, has had his own share of deaths. Dick Grayson's popularity has ensured that his character has always returned to the pages of a comic book. His deaths have always resulted in him returning to life.

10 I Am Bane

This storyline began in Batman Volume 3 #16. That issue contains a truly shocking moment for Robin fans. Gotham Girl, Bruce, and Alfred head down to the Batcave only to discover they had an unwanted guest.

Somehow, Bane had gotten into the cave and strung up three bodies. Gotham Girl began screaming at the sight of Nightwing, Robin, and Red Hood hanging from their necks. Bruce and Alfred are shocked to see their allies. Bane had used the bodies of three innocent people as substitutes.

9 The Gift

The time-traveling hero, Booster Gold, was searching for the perfect wedding gift for Bruce Wayne. Booster Gold decided to go back in time and save Bruce's parents, giving him the chance to experience growing up with his parents alive.

As a result, Booster Gold manages to create a sick and twisted world. Dick Grayson becomes Batman, but he lacks any of his usual kindness. He is a ruthless, cruel Batman. Dick Grayson is killed by Bruce Wayne after breaking into Wayne Manor to deal with the murderous Catwoman.

8 Batman Volume 1 #156

The story was titled, "Robin Dies at Dawn." The Golden Age comic was written by Bill Finger. This story is known for being the first time a Robin died in comics.

The story begins with Batman deciding to participate in a government experiment. His time alone starts to take a terrible toll on his mind. He imagines he is on an alien planet and sees his closest friend and ally dying as a result. Batman's hallucinations become so bad that he threatens to retire.

7 Ric Grayson

Dick Grayson got shot in the head after facing off against an enemy called the KGBeast. For a moment, it looked like the character might die. In a way, he did.

Dick's blow to the head gave him amnesia. There was an incredible change in the character. He didn't remember who he was. He didn't remember his allies. He changed his name to Ric and Dick Grayson seemed to be gone forever. Over time, his memories would eventually return. For a little while, though, the character was gone.

6 Red Rain

The vampiric version of Robin was introduced as part of the Countdown to Crisis. Dick had begun his life as a human in this alternate universe. His parents had been killed by the vampire known as, Batman. Dick becomes obsessed with staking the vampire.

He approaches Barbara Gordon, who he knows is working with Batman. Dick gets the information he needs from Barbara and kills her for her trouble. Dick reaches the vampire's lair but finds himself unable to kill Batman. Batman then turns Dick into a vampire, forever forcing him to become a member of the undead.

5 Emperor Joker

This Superman story puts the Man of Steel up against an all-powerful Joker. The Joker had been given most of Mister Mxyzptlk's powers. The psychotic clown should have never been allowed to have the ability to warp reality to his twisted whim.

The Emperor was holding Batman prisoner, unable to kill his oldest enemy. Still, the Joker ruthlessly tortured the Dark Knight. The clown repeatedly killed his nemesis and brought him back to life. The small level of protection given to Batman didn't extend to his allies. The Joker is shown with the dead bodies of Dick Grayson, Tim Drake, and Jason Todd. Dick's body appears bloated. There is something that has been shoved into his mouth, something resembling a bomb.

4 Dick Grayson (Earth -22)

Not much is known about this version of Dick, but it is believed he had a life similar to the regular continuity's Dick. He probably lost his parents at a young age before being adopted by Bruce Wayne. He likely trained as Robin before transitioning into Nightwing.

Unfortunately for this Dick Grayson, his Batman got exposed to some Joker toxin. Bruce summoned the Bat-Family to the Batcave and proceeded to kill all of them. Dick died beside Barbara, Jason, and Tim. The Batman Who Laughs only spared his biological son, Damian Wayne.

3 Injustice

Dick Grayson's life started off somewhat normally. He was adopted by Bruce. He became Robin and then Nightwing. He developed a close relationship with his younger brother, Damian.

Nightwing experienced a series of unfortunate events when he was out with Batman and Robin. Robin angrily threw something at Nightwing's head and he fell to the group, hitting his head on a rock. Robin looked horrified as he stared down at Nightwing's lifeless body. Bruce refused to forgive Damian for his actions, and Damian had a tough time forgiving himself.

2 Forever Evil #7

Grayson Spyral Hypnos

After Dick Grayson was kidnapped by an evil version of the Justice League, the only way to save the world was to kill him. His secret identity was exposed and then he was hardwired into a nuclear bomb. Lex Luthor managed to stop the bomb's detonation, by giving Dick a paralytic that stopped his heart.

Batman became enraged and attacked Luthor, not realizing at the time that there was still a way to save Dick. A shot of adrenaline saved Dick, but everyone was left to think he had died. Meanwhile, Batman sent him undercover to investigate Spyral.

1 Damian, Son Of Batman

This limited series takes place in the future when Damian is a teenager and still uses the name Robin. While Batman and Robin are out on patrol, they get caught up in a bomb. Damian was able to survive the bomb, but Batman wasn't so lucky.

A furious Damian returns to the Batcave, plotting revenge. An elderly Bruce confronts his son, revealing that Dick Grayson was the one who died. Bruce had retired in his old age, passing the title of Batman to his adopted son.
