Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy is probably one of the most revered superhero trilogies in popular culture. Each film in the trilogy was marvelous and Nolan showed how it was possible to make a "serious" comic book movie. Michael Caine's portrayal of Alfred Pennyworth needs special mention, as it is this character that brings some much-needed lightness to the films.

Michael Caine's style of dry humor matches perfectly with the overall tone of the film. Alfred cares about Bruce Wayne, more than Bruce Wayne himself. And the importance of this character cannot be overstated, and here are some of his most memorable quotes from the films that will further prove this.

10 "You Start Pretending To Have Fun, You Might Even Have A Little By-Accident."

Batman Begins told the origin story of the Batman, showing the viewers how Bruce Wayne trained himself. It also showed the viewers the close relationship between Alfred and Bruce, and the trust and belief they had in each other.

When Bruce comes back to Gotham and decides to pursue life as Batman, Alfred very wisely tells him that he needs to be seen in the outside world so that people don't grow suspicious. With sardonic wit, Alfred mentions a few things that billionaires such as himself could pretend to engage in just to throw the public off.

9 "At This Point, I'd Set You Up With A Chimpanzee."

dark knight rises catwoman

Bruce Wayne has been a recluse since the events of The Dark Knight. In the many years that have passed, he has simply kept to himself and distanced himself from everyone else. The loss of Rachel had hit him so hard that he simply couldn't envision a future for himself. It is at such a time in his life that Selina Kyle makes her entry.

Her cleverness in stealing his fingerprints interests him and Alfred suggests that they exchange notes over coffee. Alfred doesn't even care that Selina Kyle is a thief, and suggests that he pursue her if it means making him leave the house.

8 "The Lamborghini, Then. Much More Subtle."

Michael Caine's deadpan humor is something to be cherished. Alfred, at various points in the trilogy, makes comments about Bruce's decisions and ways of doing things. It is simply hilarious for viewers, even though Caine's face is inscrutable.

This quote is part of an exchange between Alfred and Bruce wherein Bruce has to leave in the middle of the day but doesn't want to take the Batmobile out because it wouldn't be too subtle.

7 "Don't Worry, Master Wayne. Takes A Little Time To Get Back In The Swing Of Things."

Can't Work Alone

Alfred never hesitates to make fun of Bruce. He loves pointing out what Bruce gets wrong, and when he messes up. In this scenario, Bruce had left his house for the first time since forever and had managed to misplace his car.

The car was stolen by Selina Kyle, claiming to be his wife. Bruce has to call Alfred to pick him up. Alfred comes to his rescue and picks him up from the fundraiser. And Alfred, with a glimmer in his eyes, happily makes fun of Bruce's situation.

6 "They'll Hate You For It, But That's The Point Of Batman."

The Dark Knight Cropped

In The Dark Knight, the Joker throws Batman in a very difficult situation asking him to unmask himself to stop deaths happening in the city. Bruce feels like he's obligated to do so, but Alfred asks him not to and to simply endure it. Alfred says that Batman has the ability to make difficult choices that no one else can make.

And even if the people hate him for it, Batman should endure it because that's the whole point of Batman. He has to be stronger, he has to endure more, he has to suffer more than an ordinary person.

5 "And You Can Just Strap Up Your Leg And Put Your Mask On, But That Doesn't Make You What You Were."

Alfred isn't afraid to say what needs to be said. When Bane's presence in Gotham becomes felt, Bruce decides to take up the mantle of Batman again. What he doesn't realize is that he had aged a lot, and the physical tolls of his earlier days have caught up with him.

Bane is incredibly strong and faster than him and it would be near impossible to defeat Bane in hand-to-hand combat in Bruce's current state. Alfred tries to make him understand that it's not possible for him to just suit back up and pretend as nothing has changed.

4 "You're Just Waiting, Hoping For Things To Go Bad Again."

Alfred refuses to call what Bruce is doing as living because he simply wasn't. He was just existing, anxiously waiting for when he was needed again. And for Batman to be needed meant something had to go wrong in the world.

Hence, Bruce's waiting is highly problematic. Alfred understands how Bruce just wants an opportunity to go sacrifice himself. He knows what that entails and he doesn't want to be a part of it.

3 "Things Always Get Worse Before They Get Better."

Alfred in The Dark Knight Rises.

Alfred always knows the right thing to say. He knows when to quip and he knows when to be sensible. The Joker tests Batman's limits and it takes everything to make sure Bruce doesn't fall apart.

After Rachel's death, he questions what the Batman has actually inspired. Alfred tries to point out how there was no point to reason it out that way. Alfred goes on to say that Batman did inspire good, but his harsh attack was bound to have had consequences. But that things would definitely get better.

2 "Some Men Just Want To Watch The World Burn."

Bruce thinks that all criminals think the same way, that they have the same rationale for what they do. Viewers get a taste of Alfred's immense life experiences here when he narrates the story from when he was in Burma, about a bandit who had been throwing away precious gems.

He understands the Joker better than Bruce because he knows that "some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money." Some people didn't do things just for acquiring more money or for revenge. Alfred understood the Joker's madness more than Bruce.

1 "Why Do We Fall, Sir? So That We Can Learn To Pick Ourselves Up."

Alfred Batman Begins

This is probably the most quoted line from The Dark Knight Trilogy and it is one of Alfred's gems. When the Wayne mansion is burning to the ground, Bruce feels like he's failed in his mission. He wasn't able to save Gotham, much less his own home.

Alfred then says this more literary version of "failures are the stepping stones to success." He knows that it is possible to learn from the mistakes one makes. And Alfred believes in Bruce's ability to get back up and continue the good fight.
